Crunch time for Allmendinger; playoff berth at stake at WGI

Times Union

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — AJ Allmendinger isn't exactly sure how it happened. More than a month later he's still beating himself up over it, though. "I just missed a shift," Allmendinger said Friday at Watkins Glen International. "It's something I've never really done before. It's still on my mind, for sure." That critical mistake happened in late June at Sonoma, one of two road courses NASCAR's Cup series competes on every year, and it hurt. Allmendinger, one of the top road racers in NASCAR, led... Is JFK's luster fading? Key memorabilia doesn't sell

Times Union

BOSTON (AP) — Is JFK losing his star power? It's probably too early to tell, but 55 years after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, an auction of some of the most iconic items associated with the Kennedy White House fell well short of the pre-sale hype. A rocking chair JFK used to meet with world leaders in the Oval Office sold for $50,000, and a collection of pens he used to establish the Peace Corps and sign a landmark nuclear treaty sold for $60,000 at Friday's auction on Cape Cod, not far from the Kennedy compound in Hyannis... Florida lobster fishermen fear trade war amid Irma recovery

Times Union

KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) — Just as they prepare for a crucial harvest in the wake of Hurricane Irma, lobster fishermen in the Florida Keys fear a trade war with China could undermine storm recovery in the island chain. Lobsters are among the seafood and other U.S. goods hit by Chinese tariffs in early July, after the Trump administration put tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of Chinese goods. Florida's nearly eight-month commercial spiny lobster fishing season opens Monday. Keys fishermen had hoped... Читать дальше...

HOUSTON (AP) — The U.S. government's improvised system to reunite immigrant families it separated at the border has left hundreds of parents in limbo after they were deemed "ineligible" to get their children back. They include a man who had his 2-year-old daughter taken because agents didn't believe he was the father, forcing him to submit DNA evidence to prove he was the parent. Thursday's theme for the catwalk and lobby party, with some human attendees in cat-ear headbands and feline-adorned finery, was "The Purring '20s." That's the era that Dorothy Parker, George S. Kaufman, Alexander Woollcott and other writers, critics... Читать дальше...

Times Union

LAS VEGAS (AP) — More than 10 months after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, police say they are closing their investigation without answering the key question: What drove a gunman to unleash a hail of gunfire that killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more? But authorities say after hundreds of interviews and thousands of hours of investigative work, they are confident there is no evidence of a conspiracy or a second gunman. Stephen Paddock was an "unremarkable man" who showed signs of a troubled mind leading up to the Oct. Читать дальше...

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — More than a year after a train slammed into a bus stuck on a railroad crossing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and killed four people, investigators report that local officials and the railroad, CSX Corp., were well aware the crossing was a trouble spot, but the information does not appear to have been reflected in the GPS mapping program the bus driver used. Judge: Release school shooting suspect's education report

Times Union

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A report detailing the educational background of Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz should be made public despite defense concerns it might threaten his right to a fair trial, a judge ruled Friday. Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer said at a hearing that the redactions protect Cruz's privacy rights and overruled defense objections that the report paints a misleading portrait of Cruz's longstanding psychological problems, many of which have already been disclosed. Weinstein lawyers ask court to toss sex case, citing emails

Lawyers for the former movie titan-turned-#MeToo villain filed notice they'll seek dismissal of the case.
