Xlendi flooded as Gozo hit with heavy rains

Xlendi flooded on Wednesday afternoon after heavy rains in neighbouring towns combined to form a river flowing down to the popular seaside destination. A video uploaded on Malta Weather's Facebook page shows the brown water rushing down the village’s main road all the way to the water’s edge.  Flooding from heavy downpours are a regular occurrence for Xlendi residents and visitors throughout the winter months. A notice that appeared on The Malta Government Gazette on the €274-million direct order in connection with an extension at St Vincent de Paul Residence was “a mistake”, a parliamentary secretary said on Tuesday. UK police find "sophisticated" illegal gun factory

Investigators said on Wednesday they had found a "sophisticated" illegal gun factory in Sussex, southern England, and had made three arrests as part of an inquiry into the criminal production of firearms. A site with a sign outside saying it was a gearbox repair business contained machinery and components suspected to be used to make firearms and ammunition, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said. Chosen as the venue for this year’s edition of the festival, Fort Manoel is permeated with historical subtexts. Teen attempted to rob his own employer, court told

A young man allegedly plotted with a gang of three to break into the Birkirkara home of his own employer, a court heard on Tuesday. Nigel Calleja, a 19-year old from Iklin, was arrested after incriminating CCTV footage put investigators on his tracks. He was charged with the attempted theft that was aggravated by violence. Updated 12.30pm - Added video Only one stork could be seen flying over Magħtab on Tuesday, possibly due to hunting illegalities, BirdLife Malta said. A flock of 18 storks had arrived on the island less than two weeks ago but the number soon dwindled after some of the birds were killed. By last week, only seven could be seen flying, with many fearing the birds had fallen victim to hunters. “The storks always move together in a flock, so the fact that only one remains is quite concerning,” BirdLife conservation manager Nicholas Barbara said. Fuel, take away food and wine were among the main items that pushed inflation, according to official figures published on Wednesday. The National Statistics Office said the latest inflation Retail Price Index figures for July, showed that the largest upward impact on prices was coming from the food index – one of the categories of products in a basket of goods, upon which inflation and cost of living is calculated. Tree branches fall on busy Rabat road

Heavy branches from a mature tree broke and partly blocked Rabat's Saqqajja Hill on Wednesday morning.  No damage appears to have been caused to passing vehicles and nobody was injured. The incident happened at about 10am at the top of Saqajja Hill. According to unconfirmed reports, the tree was hit by a large truck which dragged the branches down. AFM rescues 100 migrants, finds two dead as war of words with Italy continues

An AFM patrol boat rescued 100 migrants from a boat 68 miles south of Malta early on Wednesday.  Two people had already died by the time rescuers reached the boat, which was taking in water and in imminent danger of sinking, the AFM said. The announcement was made within minutes of the Maltese government reacting to a claim by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini that Malta was not fulfilling its commitments to a migrants redistribution mechanism established by the Italian authorities. Nature Trust volunteers watching over the turtle nest at Ġnejna Bay on Tuesday night treated to a spectacle of light from every direction as the top picture by Elaine Bajada shows. Ġnejna was surrounded by lightning and heavy showers but the bay itself was spared. "We're hoping that these last few days will be free from heavy showers in the bay, so as to optimise the chances of a successful hatching," the volunteers said.  Andrea Muscat also sent the picture (below) of lightning strikes off Malta.

Bales of hay, two cars catch fire on Rabat farm

Several bales of hay caught fire at a Rabat farm on Tuesday night, destroying two cars as a result. It is not yet know why the bales caught fire. The possibility of arson is not being ruled out and a magisterial inquiry is likely to be ordered, police said. Police were informed of the incident, which took place at around Triq Ħad Dingli, at around 11pm. No one was injured in the incident since there was no one at the farm when the incident took place.

Motorcylist injured in Msida crash

A 53-year-old motorcyclist from Msida was injured on Wednesday morning in a traffic accident in his hometown. The police said the motorcycle was involved in a collision in Marina Street at 7.45am. The collision also involved a Toyota Vitz and a Peugeot 206, driven by 33 and 24-year-old men respectively, both from Naxxar. The motorcyclist was hospitalised.
