Meditation garden to open at Paceville's Millennium Chapel

Amid the gentlemen’s clubs, massage parlours and bars in Paceville, a new, tranquil spot offers people the possibility of sitting down and meditating, completely cut off from the hubbub just metres away. This place of tranquillity – in the form of a meditation garden – has just been added to the Millennium Chapel and will open its doors towards the end of August. Since the idea of the garden was first reported in the Times of Malta two years ago, things in Paceville have taken a more unruly turn and the need for such peaceful spaces has grown... Interim Baltimore Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle says a viral video of a police officer beating a man is "extremely disturbing" and unacceptable. Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Tuggle said he has accepted the officer's resignation. The video showed the officer repeatedly punching a man in the head and body as he tackled him to the ground.

The migrant rescue ship Aquarius, currently at the heart of the second migrant standoff between Italy and Malta in as many months, has run into vessel registration problems and could be stripped of its Gibraltar registration. Italy has closed its ports to the vessel and demanded that Britain take the 141 migrants on board the vessel in virtue of its Gibraltar registration. Too many Spaniards in Spanish hotel, tourist complains

A British woman has claimed her holiday to Benidorm, in Spain, was ruined because her hotel had 'too many Spaniards in it' the Daily Mirror reported.  Freda Jackson, 81, said that Spanish people should go somewhere else for their holidays and she cried at the end of her two-week trip. Stripes earn historic point in women's Champions League

Birkirkara earned a historic point in their final game of Group 6 of the UEFA Women's Champions League after holding Cardiff Met Women of Wales to a 2-2 draw. First MSSP overseas mission is 50 years old today

Fifty years ago today, the Missionary Society of St Paul set up its first mission in Peru. Since then, dedicated members have worked tirelessly to pass on their missionary zeal and love for those in need in different parts of the world. Aretha Franklin is 'gravely ill' - reports

Soul singer Aretha Franklin is gravely ill, family members have told Detroit news outlets. Detroit's Channel 4 anchor Evrod Cassimy said that he had spoken with the legendary singer’s family members. “She is asking for your prayers at this time,” he tweeted. He later wrote that the singer was resting and surrounded by family and friends.  The 76-year-old was forced to cancel concerts earlier this year due to health concerns and has now taken a turn for the worse, the Associated Press reported. MSE Equity Price Index drops to 3-month low

The MSE Equity Price Index trended lower for the third consecutive trading session declining by a further 1.27% to a three-month low of 4,286.888 points. Most of today’s decline was due to the drops in the share prices of HSBC (-4.8%) and BOV (-1.9%) whilst only GO performed positively. Meanwhile, a further three shares closed the day unchanged. Għargħur double murder - the accused had blood on his shirt and shorts

Sufficient evidence exists for a man charged with the murder of his mother and aunt in Għargħur last month to be placed under a bill of indictment, a court declared on Monday. Kevin Micallef, a 42-year old self-employed man allegedly stabbed his elderly relatives following a lurking suspicion that they had been putting substances in his drink. Conditional discharge for drunken Paceville slasher

A French student who slashed a Maltese man with a broken bottle in Paceville was conditionally discharged on Monday after a court heard how the victim had forgiven him and was not interested in further proceedings. Yanis Meherzi admitted the incident, which took place on August 2, at around 3.30am, in St Rita Street. He pleaded guilty to having involuntarily placed the life of the victim in manifest danger by hitting him with a broken bottle causing him grievous injuries. Very public eco-friendly urinals peeve Paris residents

A new set of eco-friendly but completely exposed urinals deployed on the streets of Paris are provoking uproar from locals. One of the bright red "urinoirs" installed on the Ile Saint-Louis, not far from Notre Dame cathedral and overlooking tourist boats passing on the Seine, has caused particular indignation. Locals have written to the town hall to demand its removal and are planning a petition. Britain pledges to end rough sleeping by 2027

Britain's government pledged to end rough sleeping in England by 2027 on Monday, a target activists said could only be achieved by investing more in building affordable homes. Homelessness has more than doubled since 2010 in England, where more than 4,100 people now sleep rough, government figures show. On Monday the government announced a £100 million package to tackle rough sleeping, including funding for housing, mental health treatment and staff training. Man, 74, falls off scaffolding

A 74-year-old man has been hospitalised after falling off scaffolding outside a hotel in St Paul's Bay. The police said the man had been doing maintenance work on the facade of the hotel when he fell a height of one storey. The accident happened at about 10am at Triq Dawret il-Gżejjer. His injuries were described as serious.

AFM patrol boat rescues 114 migrants, brings them to Malta

A group of 114 migrants was brought to Malta on Monday afternoon after being rescued from a sinking dinghy 53 nautical miles south of Malta. The dinghy was spotted by a patrol boat of the Armed Forces of Malta which was on a routine patrol early in the morning.  The dinghy was taking in water however, all migrants were eventually rescued by the patrol boat. Suspect put investigators on the right track after attempted burglary, court told

A man admitted to his involvement in the attempted burglary of a house in Birkirkara but he got off with a suspended sentence after a court heard how he had fully cooperated with the police and had been 'practically coerced' to involve himself in the crime. Another man pleaded not guilty while another two suspects are still being sought. Alleged stork poacher arraigned, denied bail

Updated 4.30pm with details A 41-year-old from Dingli has been arraigned in court and charged with having killed protected storks. James Magri allegedly shot down three protected white storks on Friday, just a few hours after the birds had flown to Malta.
