A pedestrian who contacted the Occupational Health and Safety Authority to warn them about an air conditioning unit dangling precariously over a pavement in Marsa has seen his attempt to help rebuffed. The concerned citizen emailed the authority on Monday and alerted them to the rusty old AC unit outside an abandoned building in Marsa. He copied Times of Malta in on the email. The Chilean government asked the Vatican on Tuesday to hand over documents related to accusations of sex abuse committed by clergy in Chile against minors, as local prosecutors stepped up raids of Roman Catholic Church offices in Santiago. The titular statue of St Julian, now back to its former glory after a 10-month restoration project, on Monday was returned to the original parish church exactly 125 years to the day since it was first delivered in 1893. NGOs have called on the government to fulfil its “legal and moral responsibility” and ensure access to dignified housing for all, after a raid on an Qormi farm that left some 80 African migrants homeless.Planning Authority enforcement officials on Monday shut down a farm which had housed more than a hundred migrants, many paying around €100 a month, in inhumane conditions. A delicate operation to refloat a small tanker that has been grounded on Qawra Point since February is entering its final stages. The 885-tonne Hephaestus was thrown onto the rocks at Fra Ben in a vicious storm on February 10. The crew managed to disembark safely and no significant pollution was caused since the vessel was empty. The ship has since become something of an attraction for visitors.  The operation to refloat it, being carried out by Cassar Ship Repair, started in May with a detailed assessment of the vessel. The MSE Equity Price Index trended higher for the first time in four days as it rebounded by 0.46% to 4,306.374 points on Tuesday. Today’s gain was due to the uplift in the share price of IHI which outweighed the declines in BOV and Trident. Meanwhile, a further four shares closed the day unchanged. The only surviving Malta Railway carriage has returned to Birkirkara station after a five-year restoration project. The Birkirkara (Birchircara) station was one of the most important stations on the single railway line which ran between Valletta and Mtarfa from 1883 to 1931. The carriage, which carried third class passengers, had already been previously lightly restored in 1983 and placed at Birkirkara station, but it was vandalised over a period of 30 years and the work had to be done all over again... Updated 3.10pm with MPT comment A bus driver in a hurry almost caused two crashes in under a minute on Tuesday morning, in the latest example of cavalier driving caught on camera. Dashcam footage shared with Times of Malta shows the bus driver entering the Marsa-Ħamrun bypass by illegally overtaking another car waiting to join the stream of traffic, forcing the driver filming to hit the brakes. Updated 3.24pm A migrant rescue ship stranded for four days at sea is to be allowed into Malta to disembark 141 migrants, who will then be shared by several countries, the government said on Tuesday. Eurozone growth was better than expected in the second quarter, flash estimates showed on Tuesday, in a sign that the negative effects of global trade tensions might be seen only later in the year. However, while the economy expanded by 0.4 per cent in the second quarter, above forecasts of 0.3 per cent growth, industrial output in the in 19-country currency bloc fell sharply in June driven by a collapse in machinery and equipment investment, European statistics office Eurostat said. A 42-year-old man from Birkirkara was seriously injured on Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car in Old College Street, St Julian's. The police said the car, a Renault Clio, was being driven by a 31-year-old South African man resident in St Venera. The victim is receiving hospital treatment.

The reception area at Karin Grech Hospital has been given a €90,000 refurbishment. Steward Health Care Malta said it had installed air-conditioning, new flooring and automatic doors in the area. The company, which runs Karin Grech, St Luke’s Hospital and the Gozo General Hospital, said it recently added seven patient transport vehicles at Karin Grech Hospital, with more to follow in the coming days.
