Zouma out for six months with ligament damage

Times of Malta

Kurt Zouma will this week undergo knee surgery which will rule him out for the rest of the season and Euro 2016, Chelsea have announced. The France defender injured his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester United. A statement on Chelsea’s official website read: “Kurt will undergo surgery in the next 48 hours and is expected to be out for approximately six months.” Zouma landed awkwardly early in the second half of the drawn Premier League contest and was taken off on a stretcher. Ronaldo plans to see out his contract with Real

Times of Malta

Cristiano Ronaldo has said he wants to see out his final two years at Real Madrid in the “best league in the world” before deciding where his next step lies. Ronaldo’s current deal with Madrid runs out in June 2018 and there has been plenty of speculation about where his future might take him, and even if he will call time on his Bernabeu stay early. However, the former Man. United forward – who turned 31 last week – has reiterated his desire to finish his contract with Madrid before then looking at what options are available. Читать дальше...

Russia says Blatter, Platini to be invited to World Cup

Times of Malta

Disgraced world soccer president Sepp Blatter and the sport’s European head, Michel Platini, will be invited to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said yesterday. Blatter and Platini, the two men at the top of the world’s most popular sport, were banned by FIFA for eight years in December over a spate of corruption scandals on their watch that, among other things, raised questions about Russia’s right to host the tournament. Mutko told Russia’s R-Sport news agency... Читать дальше...

Napoli and Juve look ahead to crunch clash

Times of Malta

Serie A title rivals Napoli and Juventus extended their winning runs on Sunday but something must give next weekend when the pair meet in Turin in a much-anticipated showdown. In what increasingly looks like a two-horse title race, Napoli beat Carpi 1-0 for a club-record eighth consecutive league win, while Juve extended their own record winning streak to 14 games with a 2-0 victory over struggling Frosinone. Ahead of the meeting in Turin on Saturday, Napoli lead the table on 56 points, with Juventus hot on their heels on 54... Читать дальше...

Allegri urged to ‘think twice’ about Chelsea move

Times of Malta

Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta has urged reported Chelsea target Massimiliano Allegri to “think twice” about accepting any potential offer from the Premier League champions. The 48-year-old coach guided Juve to the Serie A title and the Champions League final last season and the Turin side’s prospects of winning multiple cups at home and abroad in 2015-16 are bright. Allegri’s growing reputation – he also steered Milan to the Scudetto in 2011 – has reportedly attracted the interest of Chelsea... Читать дальше...

Football news

Times of Malta

Swansea City must learn to kill off teams by scoring at least two goals, goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski said as the club seek to keep out of the Premier League’s relegation dogfight. Swansea, unbeaten in four games, are yet to lose in the league under new coach Francesco Guidolin but they are fifth-bottom of the table, four points above the relegation zone. “At the moment we are at the stage where I think we have to kill off the game rather than hold on to just the one goal,” Fabianski told British media. An end to gladiator politics

Times of Malta

Dear Joseph and Simon, there must be another way than this diehard rule, all or nothing, winner takes all, style of politics. People are exhausted by the news and the gladiatorial style of combat, which never seems to let up. Here are four suggestions that you can both easily agree on and which are needed to ensure we do not lose the positive democratic development we have experienced since Independence. The first suggestion is to nurture critics within political parties or movements as well as independent commentators. Читать дальше...

US athletes should consider pulling out if fear Zika – officials

The United States Olympic Committee told US sports federations that athletes and staff concerned for their health over the Zika virus should consider not going to the Rio Olympic Games in August. The message was delivered in a conference call involving USOC officials and leaders of US sport federations in late January, according to two people who participated in the call. Hip problem in heavy dogs

Times of Malta

On January 30, during oneof Moira Delia’s popularprogrammes on TVM, Animal Diaries, a young vet wasinvited to explain what hip dysplacia meant. The vet was very knowledgeable and it was evident that he knew the subject very well. But I thought it wasn’t fair on the vet to talk about such a difficult matter in such a short time. I am afraid that in trying to simplify the subject there isa danger that oversimplification will result and the subjectwill be trivialised and made grossly misleading. The... Читать дальше...
