Dry spell keeping mosquitoes carrying Zika away from Malta

Times of Malta

The dry spell this winter may very well be a mixed blessing, as although it has prompted farmers to pray for rain it has also helped keep the Zika-carrying Asian tiger mosquito away. University of Malta rural sciences lecturer David Mifsud told The Sunday Times of Malta that the chances of a Zika virus outbreak in Malta are very remote. Dr Mifsud explained that only two mosquitoes are capable of carrying the Zika virus: the Aedes aegypti mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito. “It is good to be attentive... Читать дальше...

Pope Francis travels to crime-ridden Mexico City suburb to say Mass

Times of Malta

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered on Sunday as Pope Francis began what was expected to be the biggest event of his five-day trip to Mexico: a Mass in the capital's crime-ridden suburb of Ecatepec, where drug violence, gangland-style killings and kidnappings are a daily fact of life. The Mexican bishops' conference said some 300,000 tickets had been handed out and an estimated two million people were expected to line the pope's motorcade route to the huge field where the liturgy was taking place. Pending industrial cases thrown into disarray

Times of Malta

Cases before the Industrial Tribunal have been thrown into disarray after a landmark court judgment ruling that its composition breached the fundamental right to a fair hearing as it was not impartial. Employment law experts who spoke to The Sunday Times of Malta vented their frustration saying that even though this scenario had been brewing for months the government was completely unprepared. Last Friday the Constitutional Court upheld a ruling made last June by Madam Justice Anna Felice who had... Читать дальше...

Spurs beat Manchester City to keep title hopes bubbling

Times of Malta

Manchester City 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2 Christian Eriksen celebrated his 24th birthday with the winning goal for Tottenham Hotspur when they beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium to stay second in the Premier League table. Spurs broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute after referee Mark Clattenburg ruled that City's Raheem Sterling had handled in the area even though he turned his back as Danny Rose crossed and the ball hardly seemed to hit his arm. But that did not worry Kane who fired his... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

The commitment comes on the back of a controversial decision last year to locate a private university investment on ODZ land at Żonqor Point in Marsascala. Last Monday during an interview on TVM discussion programme Reporter, Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech said the government had made “a conscious decision” not to encroach further on ODZ. Asked... Hibs outsmart below-par Stripes

Times of Malta

BIRKIRKARA-0, HIBERNIANS-2 Hibernians kept their title defence bid on track after ending their second-round commitments with a 2-0 victory over Birkirkara. The champions were worth their win as they played the better football while Birkirkara produced another below-par performance, failing to find the net for the third game in a row. Goalkeeper Justin Haber made his debut for Hibernains ironically against Birkirkara, the club he left last month to join the champions. Hibernians were the stronger team in the initial stages. Fat chance of obese people judging the right distance, say scientists

Times of Malta

Obese people may have found a good excuse for not going the extra mile, thanks to scientists. It seems that the heavier you are, the greater your brain perceives distances to be. Tests showed that a person weighing 23 stone sees objects as being twice as far away as someone tipping the scales at a trim nine stone. The effect also applies to hill gradients. For a heavier individual, a hill will appear steeper than it does to a slim neighbour - another reason for taking the lift instead of the stairs. Читать дальше...

Villa collapsed midway through the second half conceding... Читать дальше...

Einstein’s predictions are proved right 100 years on

Times of Malta

Last week, scientists ‘listened’ as two massive black holes, each 100 kilometres across, circled each other in the void some 1.3 billion years ago. As the black holes drew closer, they finally combined, smashing together in a violent merger that sent vast amounts of energy hurtling out in the form of gravitational waves. These waves, tiny distortions in the fabric of space and time, a bit like the ripples on the surface of a pond, had been predicted by Albert Einstein in his theory of general relativity 100 years ago ... Life should be cherished even when it becomes a burden - Archbishop

Times of Malta

Life should be cherished even when it becomes a heavy burden as a result of aging or terminal illness, Archbishop Charles Scicluna said. In his homily on the occasion of Jum il-Hajja, held at St John’s CoCathedral in Valletta, Mgr Scicluna spoke about the dangers of euthanasia and assisted suicide and said that he understood the temptation to say that it was dignified to stop one’s discomfort and suffering. It was a major temptation and one had no right to condemn those who considered ending their life in the face of such burden. Читать дальше...

369-metre container ship refloated after it grounded on sandbank

Times of Malta

A container ship which grounded on a sandbank in a busy shipping lane has been refloated and safely returned to port. The 369m-long ship had become stuck on Bramble Bank in Southampton Water on Saturday - the same sandbank on which the car carrier Hoegh Osaka grounded just over a year ago. The Port of Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) sent eight tugs to assist the vessel but the container ship refloated on its own and managed to return to port under its own power. A Coastguard spokeswoman said... Читать дальше...

The outspoken academic, 74, fell ill on February 5, forcing him to cancel a tour of Australia and New Zealand. Now recovering at home following four days in hospital, Professor Dawkins has described feeling that the stroke had taken him "back to childhood" because his "biggest challenge is buttons". The Church was among well-wishers who sent messages of support when the news emerged on Friday... Читать дальше...

1615 acute dry spell made Gozitan woman silver rich

Times of Malta

An acute dry spell which four centuries ago had brought Gozo’s population to its knees was a blessing in disguise for a deprived unmarried woman who received a large sum of money raised during a religious pilgrimage. A document recently unearthed by Assistant National Archivist Joseph Bezzina reveals that between September and November 1615 there had been a “gran penuria di pioggia in quest Isola di Gozzo” – an acute rainless period in Gozo. For this reason on Sunday November 15, 1615, the Universitas Gaudisii... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

MILAN 2 GENOA 1 Goals from Carlos Bacca and Keisuke Honda fired Milan to a 2-1 win over Genoa. Strikes in each half ensured the hosts kept the pressure on Serie A's top five and left Genoa looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone. Alessio Cerci hit a consolation for Genoa but it was too late to deny Milan the victory. Bacca struck after just five minutes, rifling the ball home from the left-hand side of the penalty area after the visitors failed to deal with a corner. Milan almost doubled... Читать дальше...

No to political party involvement in choice of judiciary, says AD

Times of Malta

Alternattiva Demokratika has expressed itself against an Opposition proposal suggesting a government and an Opposition representative on the five person board nominating judges and magistrates. “We do not accept having to subject these nominations to the vetting of the two parties, who already dominate the Broadcasting Authority and the Electoral Commission, "AD chairman Arnold Cassola said.
