Amazon, Flipkart face competition law breach probe

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Monday ordered an investigation into alleged violations of competition law by India’s largest online retailers Amazon and Flipkart. The allegations include exclusive launch of mobile phones, preferred sellers on the marketplaces, deep discounting and preferential listing/promotion of private labels.

On the Centre’s note submitted through AG K K Venugopal on Friday, a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K M Joseph said, “In substance, what is stated is that appointment of judges in high courts is an administrative matter between the executive and the judiciary and falls within the domain of the Supreme Court collegium and, thus, it should not be examined on the judicial side.”

JNU reopens but teachers boycott classes

The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) said that there was no question of starting the winter session when virtually no exams were held in the monsoon semester. The administration, in turn, issued a notice to the teachers for not carrying out their duties. As a result, even as all schools opened, there were no classes. JNUSU, too, issued a boycott call.

The CJI’s observation came when senior advocates Indira Jaising and Rajeev Dhavan said deferring the hearing on faith vs fundamental rights issue could clash with the hearing on petitions challenging CAA and scrapping of J&K’s special status, both pending before different benches, and make it difficult for advocates who are also engaged to argue the latter two issues.

Ghosh slammed CM Mamata Banerjee “for not opening fire and ordering lathi-charge” on those destroying public property during anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests across the state.

Eminent economist Amit Bhaduri has given up emeritus professorship at Jawaharlal Nehru University, alleging mishandling of the current situation by the university administration. In his letter to the vice-chancellor of JNU, Bhaduri expressed pain at throttling of dissent by the university administration. Bhaduri had joined JNU in 1973 and had left it in 2001.
