Over 200 academics write to PM against ‘Left role’

More than 200 academicians have written to PM Modi blaming a “small coterie of Left-wing activists” for the deteriorating academic environment in the country. The statement by 208 academicians is being seen as part of the ruling dispensation's efforts to mobilise support in academia after it faced flak from a section of the intelligentsia over protests in certain universities over a host of issues.

94% offenders knew rape survivors: NCRB data

Highlighting the vulnerability of girls and women within their homes, neighbourhoods and workplaces, the report said of the 33,356 rape cases in 2018, the offender was a family member in 2,780 cases. The highest number of such cases were reported from MP (5,209), Rajasthan (3,748) and Uttar Pradesh (3,718). Only in 2,036 cases were the offenders either unknown or unidentified.

Quit BJP, will help form new govt: Cong to Sonowal

Opposition leader in Assam assembly Debabrata Saikia on Saturday asked CM Sarbananda Sonowal to quit BJP and form an alternate govt in the state with Congress support. "In view of the current situation in Assam, Sonowal should leave BJP and come out with just 30 of his MLAs as Independents. We will support him to form a new anti-CAA and anti-BJP govt in Assam. He will be made CM again," Saikia said.



Price cap effect: 60% stent market with Indian cos

Bodo militants return from Myanmar, lay down arms

Assam’s last Bodo militant group, National Democratic Front of Boroland (S) — a close ally of the Paresh Baruah-led Ulfa — left its Myanmar base and surrendered to the Indian authorities on the India-Myanmar border on Saturday. Security sources said that 50 heavily armed cadres of the group led by its chairman B Saoraigwra have surrendered a large cache of weapons and have been brought to Guwahati.

Rockets hit Iraq airbase hosting American troops; four injured

Four rockets slammed into an Iraqi airbase north of Baghdad where US troops are based, military sources told AFP on Sunday, with security forces saying four Iraqi airmen were wounded. A majority of US airmen stationed at the Al-Balad airbase north of Baghdad had already left, the military sources said, following tensions between the US and Iran over the last two weeks.
