Scientists baffled by discovery of 'weird galaxy' where dark matter doesn't exist

The Week

Here is a cosmic head-scratcher if there ever was one: Dark matter — an invisible, fundamental part of the universe — is supposed to be everywhere, with researchers "observing" its unobservable existence by following how the particles influence the movement of light or celestial bodies such as stars. Now scientists have found something that no one even knew was possible, The Associated Press writes: a galaxy with no dark matter at all.

Is Trump in hiding?

The Week

President Trump has not been seen in public in five straight days, with Wednesday marking "the fourth workday in a row that Trump has two hours or less of presidential duties on his official schedule, and none open to his press poll," writes CNBC's Christina Wilkie. While Trump emerged from the White House on Tuesday night to visit the private residence of a donor, real estate developer Giuseppe Cecchi, it was not part of the president's official duties, The New York Times writes.

Apple indoctrinates the kids

The Week

The vibe of Apple's iPad event this week, in which it introduced a new, cheaper model aimed at students and schools, could easily be summed up with that old chestnut "cheap and cheerful." Accompanied by a presentation full of cutesy graphics and text, along with an education price tag of $299, it became clear that Apple is hoping to make the iPad as accessible and student-friendly as possible.

Scientists studied ancient Asian folk art to create the Band-Aid of tomorrow

The Week

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are using the ancient Asian folk art of paper cutting, called kirigami, to make a better bandage, MIT News reports. This will be good news for anyone who has ever struggled to put a Band-Aid on a knuckle, knee, or elbow, only to have it pop off after the tiniest movement. By strategically slitting the bandage, researchers have developed a pad that can be applied to parts of the body that are "highly deformable" (that's a fancy way of saying "very bendy"). Niece says former Russian spy, poisoned by nerve agent, is in grave condition: 'I have maybe 1 percent of hope'

The Week

The former Russian spy and his daughter who were poisoned in Britain by a nerve agent have just a small chance of recovery, The Guardian reports. Sergei Skripal's niece, Viktoria Skripal, said her uncle and cousin's chance of pulling through "really isn't good." Speaking with BBC, she added "out of 99 percent, I have maybe 1 percent of hope."

All 22 female senators sign letter pressuring McConnell, Schumer to advance sexual harassment legislation

The Week

All 22 women in the Senate — Democrats and Republicans alike — have come together to skewer the chamber's "inaction" on sexual harassment legislation, CNN reports. "We write to express our deep disappointment that the Senate has failed to enact meaningful reforms to the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995," the letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) says. "We urge you to bring before the full Senate legislation that would... Читать дальше...

CNN's Alisyn Camerota cleverly pressures God and Donald Trump author on how evangelicals can overlook the president's alleged treatment of women

The Week

CNN's Alisyn Camerota had her Bible quotes ready when she went into her interview with God and Donald Trump author Stephen Strang on Wednesday morning, pressing him on how some evangelicals can overlook Trump's personality in favor of his policies. "In order to receive forgiveness, don't you need to confess to your sins?" she asked. "Isn't that a tenant of the Bible? Don't you have to own up to these things? You know, Donald Trump famously said he's never asked God for forgiveness."

Facebook rolls out simplified privacy tools amid continued fallout from its Cambridge Analytica scandal

The Week

On Wednesday morning, Facebook announced that it is consolidating its privacy and security settings so users have an easier time managing what data about them Facebook and third parties can access. Facebook has made similar moves in the past, including combining most of its privacy settings into one page in 2009, but mobile users still had to go to almost 20 different screens to access their privacy settings. Most of the new changes have been in the works for "some time," Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan said in a blog post... Читать дальше...

The Week

1.

China said Wednesday that it won a pledge from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to denuclearize during his surprise "unofficial" visit to China this week that included a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In exchange, China promised to uphold its friendship with Pyongyang. It was the first known trip abroad for Kim since taking power in 2011. Xi reportedly invited Kim to make the visit, which began on March 25 and wrapped up on Wednesday. Kim traveled with his wife, Ri Sol Ju... Читать дальше...

Washington is furious about Facebook, but Trump is reportedly 'obsessed' with Amazon

The Week

Congress may be hauling in Facebook executives for grilling about privacy safeguards, but Mark Zuckerberg apparently has nothing to fear from President Trump. Instead, five sources tell Axios, Trump is raring to go after Amazon. "He's obsessed with Amazon," a source said. "Obsessed." Vice President Mike Pence is reportedly concerned about the power Facebook and Google wield, but Trump has mused about changing Amazon's tax status and "wondered aloud if there may be any way to go after Amazon with... The White House announces its revised trade deal with South Korea

The Week

On Tuesday eveninig, White House officials announced that the Trump administration had successfully renegotiated the six-year-old South Korea-U.S. trade agreement (KORUS), giving President Trump his first major trade deal since being elected. In return for exemption from Trump's 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent tariff on aluminum, South Korea agreed to limit its U.S. steel exports to 2.68 million tons a year, or roughly 70 percent of its average exports from 2015 to 2017; allow twice as many U.S.-made cars... Republicans' Census plot

The Week

In 2009, Rep. Michele Bachmann, a far-right member of Congress from Minnesota who a couple of years later would briefly be the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination (seriously, that really happened), announced that she'd refuse to answer most of the questions on her Census form, because you never knew what that dastardly Obama administration might be up to with all that data collection. At the time, she was roundly mocked for her paranoia. The Census? Could you find a more non-partisan government agency? Читать дальше...

The Parkland kids have triggered conservative snowflakes

The Week

Over the weekend, the March for Our Lives event featured gigantic rallies across the nation, including one in Washington, D.C., that drew several hundred thousand people — depending on estimates, perhaps the largest single rally there in American history. It was an inspiring demonstration of American citizens exercising their democratic liberties.

Trump's porn star accomplice

The Week

In the days since 60 Minutes broadcast its interview with pornographic actress Stormy Daniels, Americans have been engaging in one of our culture's very favorite but increasingly absurd pastimes: turning thoroughly ordinary and sometimes even sordid individuals into role models, heroes, and protagonists in grand, unsubtle morality plays.

Stephen Colbert has an audacious idea for Trump's next lawyer in the Mueller-Russia investigation

The Week

President Trump is rather famously having trouble finding good lawyers to represent him in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, and two more prominent attorneys turned him down on Monday, Stephen Colbert said on Tuesday's Late Show. Those lawyers and two who backed out Sunday all cited "conflicts," Colbert said, imagining their excuse: "Oh, I'd love to be your lawyer, Donald, but I've got conflicts. It turns out I'm already scheduled to ride a mechanical bull made of cheese graters and then squat in a bowl of gin... Читать дальше...
