Rex Tillerson's lamentable legacy

The Week

It was a heck of a way to get canned. Early Tuesday morning, President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson via tweet and announced Mike Pompeo, head of the CIA, as his replacement. There was something especially appropriate about Trump making this announcement, as he does so many, through Twitter, and without giving Tillerson either time to respond or even notice of his removal. The deliberately insulting gesture is not only a hallmark of Trump's management style, but a nice synecdoche... Читать дальше...

Tillerson, Trump, and the White House smokescreen of lies

The Week

It seems that no one thought Rex Tillerson was a good secretary of state — not the career diplomats who have fled from their jobs at the State Department on his watch, not the foreign policy analysts who have pointed to his poor management of the department and clumsy dealings with foreign governments and dignitaries, and not the president himself, who had griped about Tillerson's performance for months and then summarily fired him via a tweet on Tuesday morning.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are adopting the inclusion rider — and they desperately need it

The Week

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck announced Monday that their film company will adopt inclusion riders in all their future projects. An inclusion rider — brought to the national consciousness by Frances McDormand's acceptance speech for Best Actress at the Academy Awards earlier this month — lets actors demand a film meet a certain level of diversity in its cast and crew.

Trump's turbulent Tuesday

The Week

What a day at the White House ...

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been removed from his post and will be replaced by CIA boss Mike Pompeo, who in turn will be succeeded by Gina Haspel (the first woman to hold the position of CIA director, as the president boasted in an early morning tweet announcing the shakeup). Both jobs require Senate votes, but Pompeo and Haspel are both likely to be confirmed.

Before getting canned on this tempestuous Tuesday, Tillerson somehow survived... Читать дальше...

Why Trump dumped Tillerson

The Week

There's never a dull moment in President Trump's White House.

Trump has dramatically shaken up up his frontline national security team just days after announcing a potentially groundbreaking diplomatic overture to North Korea. On Tuesday morning, the president unceremoniously dumped long-suffering Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (who reportedly learned of his ouster via Trump's tweet), replacing him with loyal CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Trump ia also promoting Gina Haspel, the CIA's deputy director, to lead the agency. Читать дальше...

Nikki Haley's congratulatory tweet to Mike Pompeo is secretly shady

The Week

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was pushed out of the White House on Tuesday, with President Trump tapping CIA Director Mike Pompeo to succeed him. Trump's firing of Tillerson was reportedly rather unceremonious, as the president apparently never called Tillerson himself and the State Department said that Tillerson was "unaware of the reason" for his own dismissal.

Trump's new pick for CIA director would be the first woman to lead the spy agency

The Week

America's 70-year-old spy agency is on the cusp of a historic first.

President Trump is nominating CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel to replace Mike Pompeo as director of the CIA, with Trump tapping Pompeo to take fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's post.

If confirmed, Haspel would be the CIA's first-ever female director, a fact that Trump touted in both his announcement tweet and an official joint statement from Trump, Pompeo, and Haspel.

Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. Читать дальше...

Roger Stone reportedly told allies about WikiLeaks' Clinton-targeting emails well before they were leaked

The Week

Roger Stone, who worked on President Trump's campaign in 2015 and then advised Trump afterward, told at least two associates in 2016 that he had been in contact with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, and he told one of them in spring 2016 that Assange had told him about emails WikiLeaks had obtained that would torment Democrats like John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, The Washington Post reports. "The conversation occurred before it was publicly known that hackers had obtained the... Читать дальше...

President Trump on Monday night blocked Singapore-based chip-maker Broadcom's proposed $117 billion hostile takeover of U.S. rival Qualcomm. The Treasury Department's Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. had flagged the deal over national security concerns. Aimen Mir, a top Treasury official and member of the committee, suggested in a letter to both companies on Sunday that the panel was leaning toward recommending against a deal, saying the committee had "confirmed" the security risks. Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee said Monday they had concluded their inquiry and found no evidence of collusion by President Trump's campaign aides in Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election. Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), who led the investigation, said he and his GOP colleagues agreed with U.S. intelligence agencies that Moscow meddled, but disagreed "with the narrative that they were trying to help Trump." Democrats said the panel had overlooked key... Читать дальше...

Stephen Colbert clinically dissects Betsy DeVos' 60 Minutes interview

The Week

On Sunday night, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos sat down with Lesley Stahl at 60 Minutes, and on Monday night's Late Show, Stephen Colbert sifted through the train wreck of an interview. "DeVos' theory is that if you take money away from public schools and give it to charter schools, that will somehow help the public schools," Colbert said. "It's a system called 'stupid.'" He tore apart her stated hesitation to "talk about all schools in general because schools are made up of individual students."... Читать дальше...

The Week

On Monday, British Prime Minister Theresa May said it's "highly likely that Russia was responsible" for a March 4 nerve gas attack on a a 66-year-old former Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, outside a shopping center in Salisbury.
