«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

President-elect’s ostentatious style marks tyrannical strategy, growing chorus of experts argue Before you dismiss President-elect Donald Trump’s latest Twitter tirade against Alec Baldwin, consider the actor’s response to the soon-to-be world leader. Trump called Baldwin’s now famous impersonation of him “sad” on Saturday night, saying on Twitter that the actor’s bit on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” “just can’t get any worse.” [...] the actor also retweeted a link to an August article from The... «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LEHI, Utah (AP) — Many Utah public school teachers work second jobs to supplement low salaries that aren't expected to rise substantially with enrollment numbers. Some education groups have discussed a nearly 1-percent income tax increase for schools.

AP EXPLAINS: How Trump plans to punish firms that leave US

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The proposal — along with Trump's negotiation to get appliance maker Carrier to keep 800 jobs from going to Mexico — suggests the incoming president will put unprecedented pressure on U.S. companies to keep jobs in the United States. Trump said he'd impose a 35 percent tax, called a tariff, on companies that close U.S. factories, cut American jobs, then relocate abroad and try to sell their products back to the United States. Trump would likely need congressional approval to impose tariffs on a specific company or a group of companies... Читать дальше...

The tomb stood to the side of a memorial to the rebel soldiers killed in an attack that Castro led on Santiago's Moncada barracks on July 26, 1953, and in front of the mausoleum of Cuban national hero Jose Marti. In the country's vast, rural stretches, Cubans packed into buses and tractor trailers, many as part of work or school groups, to wait hours under a blistering sun to say goodbye. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Though the church said investigators found the allegations credible, the accuser couldn't sue or press criminal charges, mainly because of the passage of time. New Mexico budget crisis rears its head in courts, colleges

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico's grinding budget crisis is taking a toll in courtrooms where overburdened attorneys have denied legal counsel to poor defendants, at museums reeling from layoffs and admission hikes, and at state universities and colleges grappling with steep spending cuts. A prolonged downturn in oil and natural gas markets continued to ripple through New Mexico's economy over the summer and into the fall, undermining state tax revenues. Fossil fuel prices are squeezing budgets... Читать дальше...

Researchers grow protective biological soil crusts

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

(AP) — In a greenhouse at Northern Arizona University, a professor is researching an oft-overlooked ecological field that could play an important role in preventing erosion and helping plants grow. Soil ecologist Matthew Bowker is growing mosses, lichens and cyanobacteria that make up protective biological soil crusts found on the Colorado Plateau, the Arizona Daily Sun reported (http://bit.ly/2h2y7nT). The degradation of biocrust weakens the fertility of soil and allows invasive plants and erosion to flourish.

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MIAMI (AP) — In the heart of Miami's Little Havana, Cuban exile Armando Garcia said Sunday's funeral of Fidel Castro granted neither simple closure nor optimism for immediate change, but was a glimmer of hope for democracy in Cuba. Garcia, 76, a retired electronics salesman who left Cuba in 1963, sipped espresso as others smoked cigars at the Versailles restaurant, a hub for exiles who fled political oppression or other hardships since Castro's communist revolution of 1959.
