(AP) — An endowment that helps fund faculty positions and student scholarships at the University of Arkansas' flagship campus in Fayetteville declined by nearly $50 million in fiscal year 2016. Endowed gifts fell from $21.1 million in 2015 to $9.9 million and investment losses totals $12.6 million and the decline is the first since 2012, and the largest since a 2009 during an economic recession.

LEHI, Utah (AP) — Many Utah public school teachers work second jobs to supplement low salaries that aren't expected to rise substantially with enrollment numbers. Increases in spending per student would be unlikely to go toward teacher salaries after health care and retirement costs are taken into account. Some education groups have discussed a nearly 1-percent income tax increase for schools.

The proposal — along with Trump's negotiation to get appliance maker Carrier to keep 800 jobs from going to Mexico — suggests the incoming president will put unprecedented pressure on U.S. companies to keep jobs in the United States. BIG SPRING, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a West Texas high school cheerleader sponsor and two cheerleaders remain hospitalized after a semitrailer hit their bus in a crash that killed another cheerleader sponsor. Officials say a small activity bus carrying six cheerleaders and two cheerleader sponsors from the Iraan-Sheffield School District was headed home Friday night after an away football game when it was hit on Interstate 20 near Big Spring by a semitrailer.

Voters in November approved a constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana for patients with certain conditions, including cancer, glaucoma, Tourette's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease and hepatitis C. TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Some streets in Toledo are closed after part of a train derailed. The derailment involving a 187-car CSX train happened about 8 a.m. Sunday. CSX says 15 rail cars derailed, including one tank car carrying a hazardous solvent. There were no injuries and fire officials say there is nothing leaking from the car. Some of the cars damaged a tower supporting high tension power lines. Two homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The white man charged with the shooting deaths of nine black parishioners at a South Carolina church wants to stop acting as his own lawyer, at least for now. In a handwritten request, the 22-year-old Roof asks U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel to bring his defense team back on board for the guilt phase of his federal death penalty trial, which begins this week in Charleston.

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a 68-year-old man has been found dead with his penis severed in a New York City bathroom and that a 32-year-old homeless man has been arrested in connection with his death. Police say the 32-year-old identified as Jerry Pagan was arrested and faces a murder charge.
