Late-afternoon sell-off steers US stocks toward lower close

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

A steep drop in Walmart's stock and losses in other sectors pulled U.S. indexes broadly lower Tuesday, placing the market on course to snap a six-day winning streak. A late-afternoon sell-off wiped out early gains by technology companies. Grocery store operators and other consumer-focused companies accounted for much of the drag on the market. Investors were sizing up the latest quarterly earnings and deal news following a long holiday weekend. KEEPING SCORE: The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 18 points... Читать дальше...

Italy warns of election threat as rival parties court Russia

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

ROME (AP) — Italian government officials are warning of possible foreign interference in the March 4 general election, sounding the alarm following the U.S. indictment of Russian trolls and evidence of Russian-sourced fake news on popular Italian platforms. Premier Paolo Gentiloni on Tuesday released Italy's annual security report, which aside from highlighting the threat of Islamic extremism, warned about online "influence campaigns" that aim to "condition both the sentiment and political orientation of public opinion... Investors are winners as companies lay out tax-saving plans

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — It's just what the GOP said we'd hear from a CEO after being handed a big tax break. But when Charles Scharf announced plans last month to spend his company's tax savings on higher wages and technology, investors began selling. The Bank of New York Mellon CEO said he had a responsibility to "share the benefit" with workers and build the "company of the future." But investors want to share in the tax bounty as well — through higher dividends and buybacks. By the end of the day, the... Читать дальше...

Uber pulls out of Morocco amid tensions

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Uber is pulling out of Morocco — a decision the San Francisco-headquartered company says is linked to the North African country's failure to reform its strict transport rules. For nearly three years, Uber has been operating illegally in Morocco — despite currently having 19,000 users in the country and over 300 drivers. In a statement Uber said "as long as there is no real reform ... we are forced to suspend our operations." Uber drivers have often been targets of intimidation. Читать дальше...

Idaho lawmaker yells 'abortion is murder' at students

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A Republican Idaho state senator yelled "abortion is murder" at a group of students who were pushing for birth control legislation at the Statehouse and now faces an ethics complaint after a post from an unverified Twitter account told them to discuss "killing babies" with a Democratic lawmaker. About a dozen University of Idaho students from Sen. Dan Foreman's district in the city of Moscow had traveled nearly 300 miles (483 kilometers) for a scheduled meeting with him Monday. Trump plan: Less health insurance for lower premiums

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration spelled out a plan on Tuesday to lower the cost of health insurance: give consumers the option of buying less coverage in exchange for reduced premiums. The proposed regulations would expand an alternative to the comprehensive medical plans required under former President Barack Obama's health law. Individuals could buy so-called "short-term" policies for up to 12 months. But the coverage would omit key consumer protections and offer fewer benefits, making... Читать дальше...

Walmart's bruising battle with Amazon saps its 4Q results

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is getting bruised in its battle with online leader Amazon. The world's largest retailer on Tuesday reported a smaller-than-expected fourth-quarter profit as it wrestled with slower e-commerce sales during the busiest time of the year. The results underscore the company's challenges in a fiercely competitive retail landscape. Those numbers overshadowed the discounter's better-than-expected sales at its established stores and higher customer traffic as online services linked to its stores attract more shoppers. «Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Central Bureau of Investigation spokesman Abhished Dayal said the five worked for the companies owned by Nirav Modi, a billionaire jeweller, and his uncle Mehul Chinubhai Choksi. Insiders: Russia troll farm even zanier than indictment says

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

MOSCOW (AP) — A Clinton-Obama sex tape using body doubles. A Facebook page promoting Texas independence riddled with grammatical mistakes. Islamic State anthems blasting out during the nightshift. The U.S. indictment centered on a Russian troll farm only scratches the surface of the St. Petersburg agency that allegedly produced online content to sway the 2016 presidential election — and glosses over how unconvincing some of its stunts could be. Many of the more eye-popping accounts of the Internet... Читать дальше...

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

The owner of Safeway and other grocery brands is buying the drugstore chain Rite Aid as retailers continue to plunge deeper into health care and adjust to swiftly changing shopping habits. Albertsons Companies executives said Tuesday that their purchase of Rite Aid's more than 2,500 remaining stores will help the combined company become a "leader in food, health and wellness." The combination will have 4,892 stores and more than 4,300 pharmacies with a stronger presence on both coasts of the U.S. Читать дальше...

Walmart takes bruises from Amazon battle in fourth quarter

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is taking some bruises from its battle with online leader Amazon. The world's largest retailer reported a lower-than-expected fourth-quarter profit and wrestled with slower e-commerce sales during the busiest time of the year, signs that underscore the company's challenges in a fiercely competitive landscape. The news, announced Tuesday, overshadowed the discounter's better-than-expected sales at its established stores and higher customer counts as online services linked to its fleet attract more shoppers. Carbs, fat, DNA? Weight loss is finicky, new study shows

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

CHICAGO (AP) — A precision nutrition approach to weight loss didn't hold up in a study testing low fat versus low carb depending on dieters' DNA profiles. Previous research has suggested that a person's insulin levels or certain genes could interact with different types of diets to influence weight loss. Stanford University researchers examined this idea with 600 overweight adults who underwent genetic and insulin testing before being randomly assigned to reduce fat or carbohydrate intake. Gene analyses... Читать дальше...

Technology companies rally, offsetting a plunge in Walmart

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

U.S. stock indexes were mostly higher in midday trading Tuesday as investors sized up earnings from several big companies. Disappointing results sent Walmart into a steep slide, pulling down shares in other major retailers and cutting into gains from a rally in technology stocks. The market, which reopened for business after a long holiday weekend, is coming off a six-day winning streak. KEEPING SCORE: The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,735 as of 12:09 p.m. Eastern Time. Читать дальше...

The company said the new jobs will be in fields such as machine translation and speech science, and it has secured an additional 22,000 square feet to expand its existing office. Amazon announced opening of the Pittsburgh facility last year. It's one of more than a dozen "tech hubs" around the country that invent and build new products and services. Читать дальше...

VALLETTA, Malta (AP) — Authorities at Malta's only airport say a fire in a fish tank pump room forced the airport to close for two hours while half-a- dozen incoming flights were diverted to Sicily. On the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera art trail in Mexico City

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

MEXICO CITY (AP) — With her unibrow, braided updo, colorful clothing and mustache, the late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has become an idiosyncratic cult figure in the United States. Kahlo has an equally passionate following in her native Mexico City. Her face is plastered on everything from handbags and jewelry to wall hangings and aprons. Her husband, the late muralist Diego Rivera, was better known during their lifetimes but she's eclipsed him in fame since their deaths in the 1950s. All around Mexico City... Читать дальше...

Gap's CEO of its namesake brand stepping down

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Gap says the president and CEO of its namesake business is stepping down and it's looking for a replacement. Jeff Kirwan, who joined Gap in 2004, took the helm of the retailer's brand four years ago. Brent Hyder, Gap executive vice president of global talent and sustainability, will serve as interim brand president. Gap, once the cool brand in the 1990s, has lost its way as it wrestles with stiffer competition from the likes of fast-fashion players like H&M. The brand saw improving sales in its fiscal third quarter... Читать дальше...

Preventive treatment for peanut allergies succeeds in study

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

The first treatment to help prevent serious allergic reactions to peanuts may be on the way. A company said Tuesday that its daily capsules of peanut flour helped sensitize children to nuts in a major study. Millions of children have peanut allergies, and some may have life-threatening reactions if accidentally exposed to them. Doctors have been testing daily doses of peanut flour, contained in a capsule and sprinkled over food, as a way to prevent that. California-based Aimmune (AIM-yoon) Therapeutics... Читать дальше...

Trump plan: Less-comprehensive health plans at lower cost

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration Tuesday cleared the way for a lower-cost, limited alternative to the comprehensive individual medical plans required under former President Barack Obama's health law. Proposed regulations from the administration would allow health insurers to sell individual consumers so-called "short-term" policies that can last up to 12 months, have fewer benefits, and lower premiums. The plans would come with a disclaimer that they don't meet the Affordable Care Act's consumer protections... Читать дальше...
