First blood test to help diagnose brain injuries gets US OK

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

CHICAGO (AP) — The first blood test to help doctors diagnose traumatic brain injuries has won U.S. government approval. The move means Banyan Biomarkers can commercialize its test, giving the company an early lead in the biotech industry's race to find a way to diagnose concussions. The test doesn't detect concussions and the approval won't immediately change how patients with suspected concussions or other brain trauma are treated. But Wednesday's green light by the Food and Drug Administration... Читать дальше...

Fannie Mae loses $6.5 billion in 4Q on tax change

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sweeping changes to U.S. tax law led to a $6.53 billion loss at Fannie Mae last quarter, putting the government-controlled mortgage company in the position of seeking cash assistance from taxpayers for the first time since it emerged from the housing crisis six years ago. Fannie Mae said Wednesday its net worth sank to a negative $3.7 billion after it had to "remeasure" its deferred tax assets to the tune of $9.9 billion as required by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, signed into law... Picking the right home rental for a Mexico beach vacation

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

COZUMEL, Mexico (AP) — Long before Airbnb was a thing, my family rented houses for our holidays rather than stay in hotels. Houses were easier with small children who needed room to run. We liked going to markets in foreign countries and cooking with fresh, local ingredients. And we liked vacationing with friends. Before internet rental sites, we selected places from catalogues based on tiny photographs. Our children had no opinions and no vote, so the decision was less complicated. Now with Airbnb... Sales tax breaks to lure data centers booming in Virginia

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Tax breaks to attract some of the world's richest companies to Virginia have exploded as the state has become a top global market for data centers. Records show that sales tax exemptions for the centers that function as the brains of the Internet accounted for more than $65 million in uncollected state revenue last fiscal year. Although Virginia forgoes sales tax revenues for certain large data centers, some local governments have reaped massive benefits. Loudoun County says... Читать дальше...

Swiss gov't seeks to bar minors from using tanning salons

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

GENEVA (AP) — Switzerland's government says minors should be prohibited from using tanning salons because of the long-term risk that radiation from ultraviolet beds could cause skin cancer. The seven-member Federal Council took the position Wednesday as it opened a consultation about measures aimed to protect the population from exposure to dangerous rays and excessively loud noises. Other proposals included limits on use of lasers in cosmetic treatments, and new rules about the use of electronic amplifiers during demonstrations... Читать дальше...
