Exxon, Chevron report sharply higher 4Q profit on tax gains

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

DALLAS (AP) — Exxon and Chevron are earning billions and benefiting from the new tax law, but profits are falling short of expectations that were based on rising oil prices. The shares of both companies fell in afternoon trading Friday. Both U.S. oil giants were expected to get a boost from crude prices, which rose sharply in the fourth quarter. Exxon's production fell, however, by 3 percent from a year earlier, to about 4 million barrels of oil a day. "This company just cannot get production growth going," said Brian Youngberg... YouTube begins flagging videos backed by governments

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) — YouTube says it has started flagging videos provided by news outlets that receive government backing. The move is part of a commitment that its parent company, Google, made last year when it was hauled before congressional investigators looking into Russian tampering with the U.S. electorate. In particular, Google faced numerous questions about RT. The service formerly known as Russia Today used to be a preferred partner, giving it preferential access to advertising even though it is funded by the Russian government. Читать дальше...

The unemployment rate remained 4.1 percent, the lowest level since 2000, the Labor Department said in its monthly jobs report Friday. The pay gains show that employers are increasingly competing for a narrower pool of workers with the U.S. expansion now in its ninth year. Raises stemming from... Читать дальше...

Groundhog Day report: Flu's worsening shadow blanketing US

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — It looks like Groundhog Day for the nation's flu report, too: It's gotten worse, and there are weeks of suffering ahead. That's the highest level since the swine flu pandemic in 2009. Last week, 42 states reported high patient traffic for the flu, up from 39. Hospital stays because of the flu were also up. Experts had thought this season might be bad... Читать дальше...

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — James Ivory didn't see "Call Me By Your Name" with an audience until the week before he was nominated for its screenplay. He caught it at a New York theater with a good audience, he says, that applauded at the end. It was his first tangible taste of the adulation for the film he wrote, about first love in Northern Italy, since it began its celebrated run at last year's Sundance Film Festival. "I've just been thinking: What is it about the film that people respond to so much?" Ivory... Читать дальше...
