The Dow was down more than 500 points Wednesday afternoon in the final hour of trade, as investors braced for Thursday's key inflation reading and as several tight races left control of Congress up for grabs. Shares of Gen Digital Inc. shot up 6.3% in afternoon trading Wednesday, enough to pace the S&P 500's gainers, after the cyber safety company, which changed its name from NortonLifeLock Inc. two days ago, reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results. The company reported late Tuesday net income that fell to $69 million, or 12 cents a share, from $333 million, or 56 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Oil futures ended lower on Wednesday, logging a third straight session decline, with prices pressured by a weekly climb in U.S. crude supplies and ongoing concerns over the impact of China’s zero COVID policy on that country’s demand for oil. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery CLZ22 fell $3.08, or 3.5%, to settle at $85.83 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest front-month finish since Oct. 25, FactSet data show.

The company reported late Tuesday net losses that narrowed to $47.3 million, or 49 cents a share, from $57.2 million, or 62 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Shares of cybersecurity company Telos Corp. plummeted 69% Wednesday, after the Ashburn, Va.-based company beat third-quarter earnings estimates but cut revenue guidance for the year as its core business suffered a lack of business wins. Telos posted a loss of $7.34 million, or 11 cents a share, after a loss of $5.22 million, or 8 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Shares of MicroStrategy Inc. tumbled 14.4% toward a four-month low, in midday trading Wednesday, and has plunged 34.5% amid a three-day losing streak, as the software company-bitcoin play suffered from the recent plunge in bitcoin prices to a two-year low. Wheat and corn futures were on track Wednesday to finish at their lowest prices since early September following the monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA lowered its 2022-2023 outlook for U.S. wheat ending stocks by 5 million bushels to 571 million bushels – the lowest since the 2007-2008 marketing year, but also raised its forecast for domestic wheat use by 5 million bushels to 1.09 billion bushels.
