Trump's economic adviser says Trump had nothing to do with Friday's strong jobs report

BusinessInsider.com

CNBC

The February jobs report that the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday was strong: 235,000 jobs were added — higher than the 200,000 expected by economists.

It was the first official report of President Donald Trump's tenure, since the survey week for January's report was before Inauguration Day.

According to Gary Cohn, the head of Trump's National Economic Council, there's no reason to credit Trump for the strong report.

During an interview with CNBC, Cohn... Читать дальше...

The area far west of midtown Manhattan was once a quiet part of town. Subway lines didn't stretch there, and many of the apartment buildings were modest in size.

But in the last decade, developers have been building on the area, and turning it into a shiny new neighborhood full of upscale restaurants, luxury condos, and fancy boutiques. Hudson Yards will have over 25 million square feet of housing, retail, and offices — the largest and most expensive real estate development in American history. Читать дальше...

Starbucks' biggest competition isn't Dunkin' Donuts — it's your neighborhood hipster coffee shop (SBUX)

BusinessInsider.com

Starbucks

Starbucks' biggest competition isn't another coffee chain.

Instead of worrying about the impact of Dunkin' Donuts or Tim Hortons, the coffee giant is keeping an eye out on trendy independent shops, according to CFO Scott Maw.

"We're still not seeing any one competitor or even a smaller number of group of competitors being an influence on our business at any time," Maw said at the UBS Global Consumer and Retail Conference on Thursday. "But what we have acknowledged... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

AP

An obscure rule in the US Senate could cause the House GOP leadership's plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act to collapse.

The Byrd rule could stymie the American Health Care Act, the bill that was introduced this week by the GOP in the House, as soon as it hits the floor of the Senate, according to lawmakers and analysts familiar with the rule.

Passed in 1985, the rule makes it so any bill going through the budget reconciliation process — like the AHCA — can... Читать дальше...

Here’s why fish float upside down when they die

BusinessInsider.com

Few things in childhood are more traumatising than waking up one morning to find your beloved pet fish, Michael Scofield, floating upside down in his tank (true story); his tiny fishy light cruelly extinguished before his time. But why do they float upside down when they decide it’s time to take a ride on the porcelain express?

The answer to this question has a lot to do with how they maintain proper buoyancy when they’re alive. As you may or may not know, most... Читать дальше...

This winter has been one of the wettest and snowiest on record for California, but what caused so many storms to slam into the state?
