A story is told about a reporter who was interviewing a successful bank president. He wanted to know the secret of the man’s success. "Two words,” he was told. “Right decisions.”

“And how do you make right decisions?” asked the reporter. The reply: “One word: experience.”

The reporter pressed on. “And how do you get experience?” he asked. To which the banker replied, “Two words: wrong decisions.”

We all recognize the importance of job and life experience... Читать дальше...

Some EU officials thought Trump's statement that the EU was 'wonderful' was a 'hoax'

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - When Donald Trump called the European Union "wonderful" and said he was "totally in favor of it", some Brussels officials feared the headline was a hoax, given the U.S. president's earlier apparent disdain for the bloc.

Trump's remarks in an interview with Reuters late on Thursday appeared to contrast sharply with comments he made last month when he labeled the EU a "vehicle for Germany", called Brexit a "great thing" and said more countries would follow Britain out of the bloc. Читать дальше...

Here's why barns are painted red

BusinessInsider.com

Ever drove down the countryside and wondered why all the barns are painted red? The answer, like most things, lies in our history.

New England settlers didn't have enough money to paint their farms. So they needed a cheap way to protect the barns' wood. They mixed skimmed milk, lime, and red iron oxide to make a red, plastic-like coating. The coating protected the wood and kept barns warmer in the winter. Soon, manufacturers began preparing paint with chemical pigments. Red became the... Читать дальше...

When it comes to buying a used car, reliability is paramount. Fortunately for car buyers, J.D. Power released its 28th annual Vehicle Dependability Study this week. Associated Press/Matt York

Throughout the US, immigrants living in the country without permission have begun changing their routines, avoiding public spaces, and even seeking refuge in churches following the Trump administration's recent directives cracking down on illegal immigration.

Fears had begun sinking in by early February, when US Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted a series of raids across the country, but the tension escalated this week after the Department of... Читать дальше...

White House officials strongly pushed back Friday on the characterization of a CNN report that said the FBI refused White House requests to publicly shoot down stories about connections between some of President Donald Trump's associates and Russian officials.

"What you guys have done is indefensible and inaccurate," the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, told reporters Friday, according to a pool report.

Before even taking the stage, CBS's late-night show opened with an animated segment in which bathroom signs were given a chance to register their own complaints about Trump's decision.

In it, the male and female signs join together on one sign... Читать дальше...

4 ways to stop stressing about money, according to a financial adviser

BusinessInsider.com

Flickr/Kevin N. Murphy

I've long held the position that even though we live in one of the wealthiest, most financially blessed countries ever, as a society, we also live a life of serious financial stress.

I often joke that it's probably less stressful to live in the rain forests of South America, hunting and gathering, than to live in our modern, tech-savvy society, paycheck to paycheck.

A lot of this stress stems from the fact that, as a society, we just don't save money very well. Читать дальше...

Big Pharma is quietly enlisting professors to justify $1,000-per-day drugs

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters/Gary Cameron

Over the last three years, pharmaceutical companies have mounted a public relations blitz to tout new cures for the hepatitis C virus and persuade insurers, including government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, to cover the costs.

That isn't an easy sell, because the price of the treatments ranges from $40,000 to $94,000 2014 or, because the treatments take three months, as much as $1,000 per day.

To persuade payers and the public, the industry has deployed a potent new ally... Читать дальше...

Tesla will begin selling and installing its solar roof later this year, the company wrote in its fourth-quarter investor letter.

Tesla unveiled its solar roof product in late October, about a month before the company acquired SolarCity in a deal worth $2.1 billion. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said it looks "quite promising" that the solar roof could be cheaper than a normal roof, factoring in the price of labor.

20 practical tips for understanding your own mind

BusinessInsider.com

Flickr/Per Mork

The most important habit I've formed in the last 10 years of forming habits is meditation. Hands down, bar none.

Meditation has helped me to form all my other habits, it's helped me to become more peaceful, more focused, less worried about discomfort, more appreciative and attentive to everything in my life. I'm far from perfect, but it has helped me come a long way.

Probably most importantly, it has helped me understand my own mind.

Before I started meditating... Читать дальше...

Kids are shamelessly curious.

So don't be surprised if your child turns to you with wondering eyes and asks, 'Are we rich?'

Once kids grasp the basic concept of money, they'll naturally have questions, explained personal finance writer Beth Kobliner in a recent Facebook Live interview with Business Insider.

"Sticking to the truth is good when it comes to money, but so is adapting your message to your kid's level," Kobliner writes... Читать дальше...

A local Swedish official also wants to help people create those babies.

Per-Erik Muskos, a councilman from the small town of Övertorneå, has announced plans to give the municipality's 550 employees paid time off to have sex.

"There are studies that show sex is healthy," Muskos told AFP, adding that couples in Sweden weren't spending enough time together. Читать дальше...

  • Immigration is a source of labor-force growth, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said recently
  • The right-leaning Cato Institute says the deportation of "Dreamers" could cost $60 billion
  • Trump's other policies could hurt US workers by making businesses less competitive

Economists disagree on a lot of issues. Immigration is not one of them.
