How one woman saved $17,000 in 10 months while living in one of the most expensive countries in the world

BusinessInsider.com

Nina Ragusa

In early 2016, travel blogger Nina Ragusa set a lofty goal for herself: Sock away $15,000 (or more) in savings.

And she did it — boosting her savings account by over $17,000 in just 10 months.

Ragusa, who chronicles her adventures on her blog, Where in the World is Nina?, has been traveling the world for over five years, and she recently spent a year living in Australia with her boyfriend on a working holiday visa.

Despite Australia's high cost of living... Читать дальше...

He once worked for Breitbart, the far-right publication that Stephen Bannon, White House chief strategist, used to run. He went to one of Trump's inauguration balls... Читать дальше...

JCPenney's store closures could push hundreds of dying shopping malls over the edge (M, SHLD, JCP)

BusinessInsider.com

Nicholas Eckhart

A tidal wave of store closures is about to hit the US, experts say, and the result could be catastrophic for hundreds of lower-tier shopping malls.

JCPenney announced Friday that it would close up to 140 stores in the next couple of months.

That follows decisions by Macy's and Sears to close a collective 218 stores in the first half of the year. Other mall-based stores including American Apparel, The Limited, Bebe, BCBG, and Payless have also recently announced... Читать дальше...

Big changes are in the works for the Marine Corps' elite snipers

BusinessInsider.com

via U.S. Marine Corps

Since the days of Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock and his exploits in Vietnam, the image of Marine Corps Scout Snipers has struck fear in the hearts of America’s enemies.

And for good reason.

The Corps has one of the most comprehensive — and toughest — training schools for its sniper teams, with a grueling curriculum of long-range shooting, covert reconnaissance and advanced camouflage.

And that’s the problem, Corps infantry leaders say.

Uber says it is not behind mysterious efforts to dig up 'intimate' info about the ex-engineer who accused it of sexism

BusinessInsider.com

Uber said it is not involved in efforts to collect personal, and potentially unflattering, information about Susan Fowler, the former engineer that published a tell-all blog post about sexism at the company. On Friday, Fowler tweeted that someone was doing research for a "smear campaign" against her, warning her friends to beware of anyone seeking personal information about her.  Many people on Twitter immediately suspected Uber as the source of the research into Fowler... The unbelievable story of why Marlon Brando rejected his 1973 Oscar for 'The Godfather'

BusinessInsider.com

Newsweek

The man who made offers others couldn't refuse once refused the movie industry's heftiest honor.

On March 5, 1973, Marlon Brando declined the best actor Academy Award for his gut-wrenching performance as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather." He did so for an unexpected reason.

In the 1960s, Brando's career had slid into decline. His previous two movies — the famously over-budget "One-Eyed Jacks" and "Mutiny on the Bounty" — tanked at the box office. Some critics said "Mutiny" marked the end of Hollywood's golden age... Читать дальше...

Trump echoes Steve Bannon in raucous nationalist speech to the biggest conservative conference of the year

BusinessInsider.com

Jonathan Ernst/Reuters

President Donald Trump fired up the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday with a speech that echoed remarks from his chief strategist, Steve Bannon, from the day before.

Over two days, the pair hammered away at the news media, touted economic nationalism, and decried the forces they said they believe are in favor of a global world order.

Bannon, who was the head of Breitbart News — an unabashedly pro-Trump outlet — before joining the campaign in August... Читать дальше...

One of Obamacare's biggest programs has overwhelming support — and it's about to leave the GOP in a bind

President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have put the Affordable Care Act, the law better known as Obamacare, on the verge of repeal, but one of the law's biggest programs has continued to gain overwhelming support.

A new tracking poll released on Friday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan health policy organization, found that a significant majority of Americans support the new Medicaid program expanded by the ACA.

According to the poll... Читать дальше...

There's a strong backlash against Oscar frontrunner 'La La Land' — but here's why it's still going to clean up

BusinessInsider.com

Summit Entertainment

Oscar voting ballots are already in, but with the awards on Sunday imminent, everyone seems to suddenly have a strong opinion about who's going to win, and perhaps more importantly, who should win.

This year, the tug of war that's emerged is between the movie musical "La La Land," which ties the record for the most Oscar nominations ever, and "Moonlight," a critically beloved and smaller indie drama about a black man in three parts of his life.

Sean Spicer compared marijuana to opioids but the science doesn't support that idea

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst

  • Trump press secretary Sean Spicer said the Department of Justice may step up enforcement against states that have voted to legalize recreational marijuana, comparing it to the opioid crisis.
  • While researchers do have questions about marijuana, most data shows it's linked with far fewer risks than opioids.
  • Marijuana doesn't cause overdoses like opioid drugs, it's not nearly as addictive, and doesn't seem to be a "gateway" to opioid use.

Pentagon: Stop using ISIL

BusinessInsider.com

The Pentagon is kicking former President Barack Obama's preferred nomenclature for the so-called Islamic State to the curb.

While the Obama administration often used ISIL, or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, to describe the terror group, a new memo from the Pentagon's executive secretary says the department needs to start using ISIS.

"The Department of Defense will use the term Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, when referring to this threat," wrote Executive Secretary Michael Bruhn... Читать дальше...

Elon Musk: Complaints of horrid working conditions at Tesla factory are 'disingenuous or outright false' (TSLA)

BusinessInsider.com

As promised, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has released the results of an investigation into factory working conditions, after a worker publicly complained, alleging that employees were underpaid, forced to work overtime, and regularly suffered injuries at the company's Fremont facility.

Musk sent a scathing email to the troops saying that the employee's account of the situation was "untrue" on all fronts, published in full by Electrek's Fred Lambert. Business Insider confirmed the authenticity of the email. Читать дальше...

A publicity strategist explains how to approach important people without feeling awkward or annoying

BusinessInsider.com

Selena Soo

Approaching important people can be awkward.

They're busy. They're successful. And they probably don't want to talk to you — right?

On Pat Flynn's Smart Passive Income podcast, Flynn asked business and publicity strategist Selena Soo, "How do you respond to somebody who says, 'Selena, I'm too afraid to go up to somebody?'"

Soo, who calls herself "a really big introvert" explains that she tells herself two things:

First, "the moment you put someone on... Читать дальше...

It's been a rough year for veteran MLB pitcher Jake Peavy.

As detailed by ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Peavy is currently unsigned and waiting to sort out some personal matters before joining a team.

According to Crasnick, last February, Peavy fell victim to a Ponzi scheme orchestrated by a financial investor named Ash Narayan, who took money that was supposed to go into "conservative investments" and funneled it into a failed ticketing business.
