Google's virtual reality ambitions appear to be off to a slow start (GOOG)

BusinessInsider.com

Darren Weaver

Google's first major virtual reality effort is off to a slow start.

This week, the company slashed the price of its Daydream View VR headset by $30, from $79 to $49, just two months after it first went on sale, a sign that interest in the device is low relative to the excellent new Pixel phone from Google.

On top of that, it sounds like Google isn't pleased with the reception to Daydream. According to Amir Efrati of The Information, Google is "disappointed" with... Читать дальше...

The head of HR at a company with over 60,000 employees shares his 5 best career tips for 20-somethings

BusinessInsider.com

Joseph Moscola

I was born just a few years too late to be considered a true Millennial, but when it comes to work, I share the same attitudes and experiences as my slightly younger colleagues.

Unlike previous generations, for whom entire careers were spent at the same company, many of us who can still call ourselves young without raising eyebrows believe in following our passions, in finding meaning in our work, and in welcoming change rather than rejecting it.

These principles have guided my own career. Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

They arrived in groups, many of them arm in arm with the brothers they’d served with on the front lines across Europe. Many sported their uniforms and carried the gear that had saved their lives in wartime. Just as they’d done before, they were fighting for a righteous cause. This time, however, they weren’t marching against the Germans. They were marching on Washington, and the year was 1932.

It all started in 1924. The U.S. government promised veterans a bonus... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

Juha Jarvinen/Facebook

Earlier this year, in an effort to learn about people's work habits, Finland launched an experiment giving $600 to 2,000 unemployed Finns every month for two years.

Kela, the federal agency running the experiment, billed it as a modified version of the economic model known as universal basic income, though some people argued it didn't qualify. Given people had to be unemployed, it wasn't technically universal.

Juha Jarvinen, one of the 2,000 lucky recipients, was not one of those naysayers. Читать дальше...

Treasury Secretary-designate Steven Mnuchin touted the revitalization, with tweaks, of a decades-old regulation on banks repealed nearly twenty years ago during his confirmation hearing on Thursday.

Last July, Republican National Convention delegates approved a platform that supported reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act. It was passed in 1933 and required banks to separate commercial deposit banking from investment banking.

Netflix is set to burn $2 billion in 2017, and it's the big thing that worries Wall Street (NFLX)

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Mike Blake

Netflix crushed its Q4 earnings on Wednesday, sending its stock soaring, but there's one thing Wall Street is still worried about: how much cash the company is burning.

Netflix is set to have a negative free cash flow of $2 billion in 2017, versus $1.7 billion in 2016.

The reason, according to Netflix, is that actually making shows yourself costs a lot of money up front.

Netflix is confident it will make that money back over the long run, but it does... Читать дальше...
