BusinessInsider.com

WikiMedia Commons

Owning a McDonald's franchise can be a lucrative business.

It has been estimated that McDonald's franchisees' gross profits average about $1.8 million per restaurant in the US.

But on top of paying franchise, advertising, and real-estate fees, operators are on the hook for a lot of other costs that they can't necessarily plan for — such as upgrading kitchen equipment and remodeling restaurants.

Bloomberg's Leslie Patton compiled a list of many of these... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

It was the early 1900s, and New York City was in transition. Automobiles were taking over the streets, but horse-drawn carriages were still everywhere. Private mansions lined the heart of Fifth Avenue, an area once called Millionaire's Row that extended from the 30s to the 60s. Even though the skyline was not yet dominated by the iconic Chrysler and Empire State buildings, the city was experiencing explosive and revolutionary growth.

10 easy ways you can make sure you're learning something every day

BusinessInsider.com

Brad Barket/Getty Images

I genuinely enjoy learning, and years ago when I first moved to NYC and intensely believed that there was a serious gap in my education — I'd never taken an art history class! — I signed up for a continuing education course at NYU.

Truthfully, though, I can tell you little about what I retained, much as I enjoyed the class at the time. I'm now on the school's mailing list, but typically emails go unread.

This isn't because I don’t still have a thirst for learning new things though; rather... Читать дальше...

Burning Man, the wild, dusty arts and culture festival that takes over the Nevada desert at the end of each summer, has become a cultural phenomenon since it began in San Francisco in 1986.

It moved to the Black Rock Desert in 1990, and attendance has grown exponentially since then — last year's event boasted an approximate attendance of 70,000. Burning Man 2016, which wrapped up September 5, is estimated to have been equally huge.

Though the festival has gained a reputation for its party culture... Читать дальше...

It looks like we’re getting a follow-up to Google’s best tablet

BusinessInsider.com

Google

The Nexus 7 was always pretty close to the ideal Android tablet.

Working with an OS that’s never quite matched the app support and productivity bent of the iPad, the Asus-made slate instead focused on what Android does best: provide a nice enough, fast enough, and much more affordable alternative, one that was entirely geared toward entertainment.

If you just wanted to browse the web or watch a movie, it was better than average and still a good bargain.

The Nexus 7 also hasn’t been refreshed in three years.
