A philosopher explains why suffering is essential to all happy marriages

BusinessInsider.com

Flickr/deveion acker

If you ask philosopher Alain de Botton, spouses should take comfort in the fact that they piss each other off every now and then.

It could just be a sign that a marriage is running smoothly.

In a recent op-ed for the New York Times, entitled "Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person," de Botton challenges the romantic notion that successful marriages contain no conflict.

People can't be perfect for one another, he argues. Suffering is inevitable, which... Читать дальше...

We asked a scientist about that 'impossibly large alligator' spotted in Florida

BusinessInsider.com

Damian Dovarganes/AP

The internet is going wild over footage of a giant alligator taking an leisurely stroll at a golf course in Florida. Deadspin called it "impossibly large."

But is it really so extraordinary?

Maybe not, says Ken Rice, director of the Wetland and Aquatic Research Center of the United States Geological Survey. He says it's difficult to tell from the footage precisely how long the alligator is, but he'd guess 11 to 13 feet.

"It's obviously an adult male," he told Tech Insider. Читать дальше...

Johns Hopkins is at the center of a debate around 'shadow grades' on college transcripts

BusinessInsider.com

Facebook/Johns Hopkins University

College is designed to be more rigorous than high school, but first semester grades can still be a rude awakening fo freshmen at competitive colleges -- many of whom are accustomed to high marks.

And some faculty members and administrators argue that worrying about grades can prevent these students from taking the kinds of intellectual risks they’re supposed to in college — or at least from focusing on real understanding over rote learning.

In response to such concerns... Читать дальше...

China has a terrible new problem

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters

China has a terrifying new problem.

Instead of the usual problem of too much money leaving the country, there is now too little money flowing in.

"Beijing is clamping down hard on outflows," said professor Christopher Balding, an economist at Peking University.

"The problem now is that inflows into China are collapsing. Probably down almost 40% this year. That is placing maybe even more pressure on the RMB [yuan] than the outflows. To run a fixed exchange rate... Читать дальше...

A new US plan against ISIS might be 'dangerously counterproductive'

BusinessInsider.com

Jake Simkin/AP

US-backed forces are finally moving toward Raqqa, ISIS' de facto capital in Syria.

But the plan to retake the city and surrounding areas from the militants is burdened by a potentially fatal flaw: The alliance that is leading the effort on the ground, the Syrian Democratic Forces, is dominated by Kurdish fighters with the People's Protection Units, also known as the YPG.

Raqqa's population is mostly Arab, and residents of the city are wary of a Kurdish force potentially moving in to control it. Читать дальше...

We're at a critical point in the fight against a growing threat to our health

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

On May 26, researchers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centers reported that they had detected bacteria with a gene that makes it resistant to colistin, the antibiotic of last resort.

The news has health officials and scientists deeply concerned because this is the first time that the gene, called MCR-1, has been identified in the United States.

The gene was found in a strain of E. coli, from the urine of a Pennsylvania woman who was treated for a urinary tract infection in late April. Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design/flickr

When you're in the hot seat, there's a good chance your interviewer will turn the tables at some point and ask, "Do you have any questions for me?"

When you have the floor, you'll want to take full advantage of the opportunity to show that you've done your homework and to determine if the job is a good fit.

But it's imperative that you put just as much thought into what you ask as you do your responses to their questions... Читать дальше...

Rams QB who signed $24.5 million contract extension before last season is now skipping offseason practices

BusinessInsider.com

Stephen Brashear/AP

Veteran quarterback Nick Foles is reportedly not thrilled about the Los Angeles Rams' decision to draft quarterback Jared Goff with the first overall pick at last month's NFL Draft, and now he is skipping practices because of it.

On Tuesday, Foles did not show up to the start of team's offseason workouts (OTAs), and sources told ESPN his absence had everything to do with Goff.

Foles, who in March earned $6 million as a roster bonus and is owed $8.7 million in guaranteed money this season... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

Disney

After Tuesday's news that the first feature-length spin-off "Star Wars" film, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," would undergo four weeks of reshoots because Disney executives saw the movie and were "not happy" with what they saw, new details have surfaced on what exactly was in the cut.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that the movie didn't have the "classic" feel of a "Star Wars" movie and that it felt more like "a war movie."

The goal is to add in some fun to the adventure. Читать дальше...

Libertarian vice-presidential nominee Bill Weld on Wednesday suggested that Donald Trump's plan to deport the millions of immigrants living in the country illegally was reminiscent of "Anne Frank hiding in the attic."

Weld, the former Massachusetts governor, made headlines last week when he said Trump's deportation plan was reminiscent of "Kristallnacht," or the "Night of Broken Glass" in Nazi Germany.

Weld defended the comments as "completely appropriate" during a Wednesday MSNBC interview. Читать дальше...

While Jastremski was reportedly reinstated by the Patriots when Brady's suspension was overturned last fall, a new story is raising questions about Jastremski's employment status.

The US death rate just rose for the first time in a decade for an alarming reason

BusinessInsider.com

Flickr/Be.futureproof

The American death rate has risen for the first time in 10 years.

According to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a greater portion of the population died in the US last year than in any other year for a decade.

The cause? Deaths from drug overdoses (many from legal drugs), suicide, and Alzheimer's disease.

This marks a sharp contrast from a decade-long trend toward lower death rates, a positive shift driven largely... Читать дальше...

How you can use the skills you already have to get a raise

BusinessInsider.com

Mark Wilson/Getty Images

In college, a summer retail job seemed like easy work with little commitment where I could punch in, punch out, earn some money, and spend the rest of my time doing what I loved.

When it seemed like only retail jobs were available once I finally graduated with a degree, it quickly became apparent that I needed to find a way to make more money and earn a better position, fast.

But where was I supposed to start? My liberal arts degree suddenly felt useless in the face of a jobless market. Читать дальше...
