In her first televised performace in years, Kesha stunned the audience at the Billboard Music Awards and got a standing ovation.

The singer performed at Sunday's awards broadcast on ABC, after her appearance had been nixed by Dr. Luke's Sony-owned label. Kesha has been engaged in a long legal battle with Dr. Luke, who she says sexually abused her, and unsuccessfully tried to get out of her contract with his label.

The manufacturing recession may not have ended yet.

A preliminary reading of activity in May showed that output fell for the first time since the peak of the Great Recession.

Markit's flash manufacturing Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) out Monday was 50.5. Economists had estimated that it improved to 51 from 50.8, according to Bloomberg. 

This index is basically on the edge of contraction, with 50 being the border between expansion and shrinkage.

The Japanese yen strengthened by as much as 0.7% to 109.35 per dollar earlier in the day.

As of 7:58 a.m. ET, the currency is stronger by 0.6% at 109.47 per dollar

The latest data from Japan showed that the stronger yen has been crushing exports. Goods sold abroad fell by 10.1% in April, while imports slumped by 23.3%. This left a trade surplus of 823.5 billion yen ($7.5 billion) — aka the largest since March 2010.

BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government does not expect Turks to get visa-free entry into the European Union before 2017 because Ankara will not fulfil the conditions for that by the end of this year, newspaper Bild cited sources in Berlin as saying on Monday.

Turkey and the EU have been discussing visa liberalisation since 2013 and agreed in March to press ahead with it as part of a deal to stop the flow of illegal migrants from Turkey to the EU.

Chinese commodity futures just got crushed

Chinese bulk commodity futures endured another bloodbath on Monday, recording falls of 5% or more.

The most actively traded September 2016 iron ore future on the Dalian Commodities Exchange finished the session at 353 yuan, representing a decline of 4.97%.

Earlier in the day it traded down to 350 yuan, or 6%, its maximum allowable daily decline based on existing exchange rules.
