Switzerland’s Vollgeld “Full Money Initiative”

I can pretty much guarantee you that the biggest story not being covered in the traditional business press right now is that Switzerland is holding a referendum later this year to consider ending fractional reserve banking (!).

Yes, you read that correctly. That paragon of the banking industry is voting on whether to deconstruct banking as it has been practiced for centuries. In case you cannot read German, let... Читать дальше...

Frankfurt (AFP) - Retailers in Germany clocked up their strongest annual increase in sales in 21 years in 2015, with business expanding by 2.7 percent, official data showed on Friday.

German retail sales, a closely watched measure of household confidence, eased by a fractional 0.2 percent in December alone, the federal statistics office Destatis calculated in a statement.

But retailers' sales jumped by 2.7 percent during the whole of 2015, which was the strongest increase since 1994... Читать дальше...

REUTERS/Toby Melville

LONDON (Reuters) - British engineering company Rolls-Royce is cutting a few dozen senior management jobs, the latest move by its chief executive to revive a company reeling from low oil prices and a slowdown in aero-engine servicing.

CEO Warren East, who took the helm in July, wants to cut the company's cost base by 150-200 million pounds a year by 2017.

Fewer than 50 senior managers at Rolls-Royce, or roughly a quarter of managers at that level, will leave over the coming months... Читать дальше...

Italy is set up for a showdown with the European Union

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters/Giampiero Sposito

The gap is widening between Rome and Brussels. The reasons are both diverging interests and increasing domestic pressure on the government. But how far will this fight go in 2016?

A year ago, Italy was widely thought to be on the right path by EU leaders.

Matteo Renzi, a member of the Democratic Party appointed as Prime Minister, was going forward with his reformist agenda, including a labor reform and an overhaul of the Italian electoral and constitutional... Читать дальше...

The biggest diplomatic push yet to resolve the Syria conflict may be derailed by the absence of key figures

BusinessInsider.com

Geneva (AFP) - UN-mediated peace talks aimed at ending Syria's conflict are scheduled to kick off Friday, but the absence of key opposition members threatens to derail the biggest diplomatic push yet to resolve the nearly five-year-old civil war.

The Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee, which met in Riyadh on Thursday, said the opposition group would not attend the negotiations in Geneva until an agreement is reached on aid entering besieged towns.

How the digital age is killing the old political order

BusinessInsider.com

As unseemly waves of an increasingly ideological debate confront parts of the European political elites, powered by fears of an immigration crisis, I’d argue that political nationalism, as we knew it, is diminishing in real and practical terms. Its killer wasn’t one of the old ideological enemies – socialism or communism or social democracy – it’s the Internet, and the borderless consumerism it has enabled.

World economic leaders gathered last week in Davos... Читать дальше...

KRAUTHAMMER: Jeb Bush had a breakout performance in the Fox News debate

Fox News

Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer said after Thursday night's Fox News Republican debate that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) might have come away a big winner.

Speaking with Fox moderator Megyn Kelly shortly after the debate ended, Krauthammer said the former Florida governor turned in a strong performance — possibly the best of the night out of all the candidates on stage.

"I thought it was, interestingly, the best night that Jeb had in all of the debates," Krauthammer said. Читать дальше...

Donald Trump cast a gigantic shadow over the Fox News debate — without even being there

Donald Trump wasn't onstage at the Thursday Fox News Republican debate.

But his presence was certainly felt.

He was, quite literally, right down the road, hosting his own event. He dominated the social-media conversation. And from the minute the debate started, Trump's rivals were forced to confront Trump's absence amid a high-profile boycott.

"For one night, he beat Fox News," wrote NBC senior political editor Mark Murray on Twitter.

Starbucks is gambling on China, and it could backfire

BusinessInsider.com

Junko Kimura/Getty Images

Over the past year, global markets have been weighed down by concerns about China's economic growth, which sank to a 25-year low in 2015. That decline darkened the outlook of many U.S. companies which are dependent on the Chinese economy. Yet one such company — Starbucks — doesn't seem worried at all.

During last quarter's conference call, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said that the coffee chain was "just getting started" in China, its largest market outside the United States. Читать дальше...
