BusinessInsider.com

Ames, Iowa, is the top-ranked college town in the US, according to a new list from American Institute for Economic Research (AIER).

The city of roughly 60,000 people earned the top spot thanks to its affordable cost of living and ample employment opportunities in the fields of science and technology.

The rankings are calculated using 11 criteria including economic vitality, availability of entertainment, and rent. AIER defines small towns as having less than 250,000 residents. Читать дальше...

Merkel wants to 'drastically decrease' refugee arrivals in Germany

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday she wanted to "drastically decrease" the number of refugees coming to Germany, signaling a compromise to critics of her open-door policy from within her conservatives on the eve of a party congress.

Merkel has resisted pressure from allies within her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to put a cap on the number of refugees entering Germany, which is expected to top 1 million this year.

"At the same time we took on board the concerns of the people... Читать дальше...

Marine Le Pen says her party's defeat won't stop the 'inexorable rise' of the far right in France

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Yves Herman

PARIS (Reuters) - The far-right's rise in France is unstoppable, National Front leader Marine Le Pen told supporters after exit polls showed her party won no region in election run-offs, suffering a major disappointment after topping the votes in the first round.

The anti-immigration, anti-Europe party failed to transform its first round breakthrough into second round wins after the Socialists pulled out of the race in key regions and urged supporters to back the conservatives. Читать дальше...

The 7 worst mistakes you can make in your 30s

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters

Your 30s are typically a time for settling down after using your 20s to take risks and find yourself.

Many 30-somethings are busy rising through their work hierarchy, developing a serious romantic relationship, and possibly raising a family.

Those who have already been through that decade say that as their responsibilities accumulated, it became easier to neglect relationships and ignore opportunities that they would never get again.

The Senate just got closer to figuring out how to stop people like Martin Shkreli, aka 'Mr. Wu-Tang,' from hiking drug prices

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters

The drug-pricing debate has officially kicked off in the Senate's hearing rooms.

On Wednesday, members of the Special Committee on Aging heard health experts speak out sharply against price gouging in which companies acquire older drugs with no generic competition and suddenly raise their price.

Notably missing from the panel of witnesses — which focused mainly on actions by Valeant and Turing Pharmaceuticals — were the companies that have done so. Martin Shkreli, the CEO of Turing... Читать дальше...

How to figure out which cognitive biases are screwing up your decisions

BusinessInsider.com

Flickr/Jrm Llvr

In cognitive psychology, there is an effect called the "better-than-average" effect.

The basic concept of an "average" implies that 50% of people will be below average, and 50% of people will be above average.

However, when you ask people if they're below or above average when it comes to any particular skill (e.g., driving or singing in tune), far more people will rate themselves as above average than the 50% that would be expected.

Likewise, even when we know about certain cognitive biases... Читать дальше...

This company could be the big winner from the Paris climate talks

The climate talks taking place in Paris will wrap up this week, and while we don't know what the outcome will be we know that the mood has changed from the last climate talk in Copenhagen. Countries are starting to make real commitments around reducing emissions and building more renewable energy capacity, and that will open up new markets to industry leaders like First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR).

While more renewable energy would be good for a lot of companies... Читать дальше...

The only known recording of Hitler's normal speaking voice

BusinessInsider.com

Bundesarchiv

"I know that men are won over less by the written than by the spoken word, that every great movement on this earth owes its growth to great orators and not to great writers." — Adolf Hitler, "Mein Kampf," 1925

In more than 5,000 persuasive speeches, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler bewitched his audiences in an altered and rehearsed voice.

Der Führer's voice was described as overwhelmingly powerful and "spellbinding" by French-American novelist George Steiner in Ron Rosenbaum's... Читать дальше...

FRENCH PRIME MINISTER: Far-right party wins no region in elections

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Yves Herman

PARIS (Reuters) — French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said the far-right National Front failed to win any region in local elections on Sunday but added that the anti-immigrant party's high score should force the government to listen.

"Tonight, there is no place for relief or triumphalism," Valls said. "The danger posed by the far-right has not gone away, far from it."

He was speaking after exit polls showed the far-right National Front had lost election run-offs... Читать дальше...

Johnny Manziel smashed a Microsoft Surface tablet against his head after throwing an interception

BusinessInsider.com

CBS Sports

It has been a rough couple of seasons for both Johnny Manziel and the official tablet of the NFL, the Microsoft Surface. So it is fitting that the two shared a bad moment on Sunday.

Manziel tried one of his improvisational plays that made him famous in college, scrambling to his left and then throwing an ill-advised pass back across the field. Of course, this is the NFL, so the pass was intercepted.

Back on the sideline, Manziel took out his frustration on the Surface tablet as he looked back over the play. Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Jim Young

In the nine years since the Federal Reserve's last rate hike, the US has gone through a housing-bubble burst, a financial crisis that nearly destroyed the global banking system, the worst recession since the Great Depression, and a slow but steady recovery marked by moderate, consistent growth.

During the darkest days of the crisis, the Fed dropped its benchmark interest rate to near zero in its emergency effort to bring liquidity to the financial markets and stimulate growth. Читать дальше...

The Cincinnati Bengals' Super Bowl hopes may have just taken a big blow

BusinessInsider.com

CBS Sports

In a huge AFC North matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals lost Andy Dalton in the first quarter, and the injury looks like it could keep him sidelined for a while.

The injury to Dalton's thumb came after he threw an ugly interception in the red zone and then tried to tackle the defender.

As Dalton went in for the tackle, the thumb on his throwing hand appeared to snap back as it hit the defender's leg.

Dalton was taken to the locker... Читать дальше...

Oftentimes we have innumerable distractions at work competing for our attention.

Luckily, music can help put us back on a more productive track.

Studies out of the University of Birmingham, England, show that music is effective in raising efficiency in repetitive work — so if you're mindlessly checking email or filling out a spreadsheet, adding some tunes will make your task go by that much faster.

But when it comes to tasks that require more brainpower... Читать дальше...
