The Last Of Us Part 2's File Size Is As Gigantic As Expected
The Last Of Us Part 2 requires 100GB of free space.
The file size of The Last of Us Part 2 has been revealed and it's as gigantic as expected, with the player needing a minimum of 100GB of free space to play the game. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have managed to avoid the need for multiple discs throughout their lifespan, but a couple of triple-A games have needed to be released on two discs.
The most recent game to be released on multiple discs in 2020 is Final Fantasy VII Remake. The PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake has a long install time, with one of its two discs entirely dedicated to a lengthy install that is mandatory for playing the game. One common complaint among gamers is the ballooning file size & size of mandatory patches that are required for playing many modern titles, as many people are stuck staring at progress bars when they just want to play their latest purchase.
It seems that the people who purchase the physical edition of The Last of Us Part 2 will be staring at some progress bars when it's released in June, as the install size for the game has been revealed. According to Twisted Voxel, The Last of Us Part 2 will come on two discs and will require a minimum of 100GB of free space. This huge file size isn't too surprising, considering the high-quality of The Last of Us Part 2's visuals.
It's possible that long install times will soon be a thing of the past. Sony has promised that PlayStation 5's SSD will reduce install sizes for games. Microsoft and Sony have been touting the incredible load times of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, so developers might soon be free to make games as large as they want without annoying the fans. The next generation of consoles isn't here yet, so the PlayStation 4 owners who want to purchase The Last Of Us Part 2 on disc will be stuck waiting for the game to finish installing.
The Last of Us Part 2 is due to be released this summer, so gamers will have plenty of time to free up space on their external drive. Naughty Dog should give fans a generous pre-load time for the digital versions of the game, as the people who are downloading the game will also need plenty of time to ensure that it's ready on launch day.
The Last of Us Part 2 will release for PlayStation 4 June 19, 2020.
