Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Trailer Reveals Final Episodes’ Hydra Twist
The latest trailer for Agents of SHIELD season 7 reveals a Hydra-related twist for the show's final episodes. After years of saving the world, Director Phil Coulson and his team are gearing up for their last mission: changing the past to rescue the future. Much like Avengers: Endgame, season 7 will follow its heroes throughout history (including their own) as they race to stop the Chronicoms from destroying SHIELD and taking over the earth. Season 7 also marks the end of an era for Marvel Television, after Kevin Feige assumed control of the MCU's TV division last fall and cancelled most of its ongoing shows in order to focus on the upcoming MCU Disney+ series instead.
In addition to tying off any dangling plot threads from episodes past, season 7 will finally bring SHIELD's overarching conflict with the villainous Hydra to a close. However, it might not be as simple as Coulson and his crew would like. In fact, the latest promo for season 7 reveals that in order to SHIELD from the Chronicoms, his team will also have to save their greatest enemy.
At least, that's what Coulson tells Daisy in the newly-unveiled preview for Agents of SHIELD season 7. You can check it out below, along with ET's exclusive poster for this season.
Much like the trailer, this poster offers a sneak peek at some of the time periods the SHIELD team will visit in season 7. Judging by his fedora and coat, Coulson is headed to the mid-2oth century, with Yo-Yo dressed in a '70s (?) style jacket and Deke wearing a distinctly '80s-esque headband. Mack is similarly rocking a headband in the trailer and appears to be channeling John Rambo, between him loading his gun and the American flag behind him. There's also a brief clip of Coulson, May, and Daisy teamed up with Daniel Sousa, who looks older than he did on Agent Carter. Hopefully, that means season 7 will resolve Agent Carter's story after the show ended on a cliffhanger in season 2, only to be cancelled prematurely.
As for that Hydra twist: it seems Coulson and his others eventually realize that, as much as they don't want to, they'll have to protect the organization to avoid messing up the timeline. It's a great dilemma for Agents of SHIELD to explore and suggests season 7 at large will try and be careful when it comes to not shattering the often-hazy rules of time-travel in the first place. By comparison, fans have spent much of the past twelve months trying to make sense of Endgame's time-travel, and even its writers and director seems to disagree on certain points. Hopefully, the show's own take on the concept will be a little more cohesive.
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD season 7 begins airing Wednesday, May 27 on ABC.
