6 Disney+ TV Shows We Wish Were Films (& 4 Films We Wish Were Shows)
Streaming platform Disney+ has given families tons of quality content, including The Mandalorian. But what if some shows were movies, and vice versa?
Streaming platform Disney+ has produced plenty of original movies and television shows. However, it's sometimes interesting to see why a certain concept has been chosen to become a feature length production over a serialized show.
There are many shows that could be formatted much better as a film and many films that might be great if drawn out as show. Here are five shows that could work as a film and five films that could work as a TV show on Disney+.
10 Film: High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
It took many years for Disney to come up with some kind of follow-up to the hit Disney Channel original movie. The original film launched the careers of many stars and can't be rebooted in a normal way.
The concept of having teenagers perform the musical at the school it was filmed at is a great twist. However, it doesn't feel like enough content to have drawn it out over a whole season. Perhaps it would be paced much better in a feature length film, hitting the same narrative points.
9 Film: The Mandalorian
The first live-action TV show based on the galaxy far far away has been incredibly well received. However, the character and the world that has been built around him would work really well as a cinematic experience.
It's a shame that this story wasn't first told as a film in order to fully introduce us to the protagonist, perhaps before moving off to a series. Star Wars films that are made for Disney+ could take the franchise in a different direction.
8 TV Show: Noelle
Disney put out a very rare Christmas film as an original for the streaming platform. The world created here, where Santa is going into retirement and a new Claus is lined up to take over the sleigh, might work better as a show.
In some ways the concepts and ideas here were rushed in the film. We'd love to see a more in-depth exploration of the North Pole and this toy-making arena of magical creatures.
7 Film: Forky Asks A Question
One of the most popular Pixar characters in recent memory is Forky from the Toy Story franchise. Made by Bonnie out of the trash, Forky has received his own short form Disney+ series centered around him exploring the world he's been thrown into.
There's absolutely a feature length adventure to be had here. While Disney has had mixed responses to spinning off characters like Dory and Tow Mater, Forky seems like a perfect fit for this project.
6 TV Show: Lady And The Tramp
We seen plenty of live-action reboots of classic Disney animated films. It's already becoming a little bit of a tired trend, but there could be other ways to reinvent these well-known movies.
Taking a classic set of characters like these titular dogs and creating an ongoing series from them could be an interesting experiment. The only issue here may be with the visual effects capabilities over a whole show about animals.
5 Film: Falcon And Winter Soldier
There are plenty of Marvel shows on their way to Disney+, but one we wish was actually coming out as a movie is the show based on the Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the journey towards becoming Captain America.
This feels like a really important chapter in the MCU, and alongside Zemo and Sharon Carter returning, it could be one of the more cinematic shows that are heading to streaming services — especially since it will feature the next Cap.
4 TV Show: Dolphin Reef
Disneynature is used to producing high-quality documentaries based on the many wonders of the world. However, these are always created in the format of a film and never as an ongoing series.
The recent dolphin documentary has been very well received, and it almost seems like a shame that all the footage that they captured couldn't be turned into an ongoing show.
3 Film: Clone Wars
Another Star Wars franchise that has gone from strength to strength is this animated show from Dave Filoni and the team at Lucasfilm animation.
It's recently been brought back for a final season on Disney+, but much like the show started with a feature length film, it feels appropriate for it to end with an animated movie as well.
2 TV Show: Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made
Timmy Failure is a much-loved book that has been adapted into a pretty competent film. The kid detective and his polar bear friend go on many adventures that are full of imagination.
It would have been really fun to see this as an ongoing series and actually be able to enjoy many other detective mysteries as the overall plot continued to move forward.
1 Film: Monsters At Work
The world of monsters has been explored in two different films and we're now receiving a follow-up series based on the popular Pixar franchise. But there might be grounds to suggest this would work better as a film.
The adventures of Mike and Sully captured the imagination of many kids and adults alike. It deserves an official sequel, one perhaps with original characters still, but in a film format to showcase the scale of this story.
