Hillary Clinton starts taking some risks — and landing some punches

Washington Post

After months of remaining largely above the partisan fray — and often appearing cautious to a fault — Hillary Rodham Clinton has begun taking more risks and landing some punches against Republicans. The more aggressive posture comes as Clinton has suffered an erosion in her public image, with more potential voters saying they view her unfavorably than at any point since she entered the 2016 race and fewer people saying they find her trustworthy.Read full article >>

With no 1,500, a repeat of Katie Ledecky’s world-record feat won’t be possible in Rio

Washington Post

KAZAN, Russia — Her hair dry, her feet in sneakers, her face free of the red outlines of goggle eyes, and her schedule finally free of racing, Katie Ledecky bopped around Kazan Arena on Sunday afternoon as if land were her natural habitat. It had been a full 22 hours since she was last in the water, but as heads turned everywhere she went, it was clear that minds were still being transported back to those astonishing last 50 meters in Saturday night’s 800-meter freestyle, when Ledecky finally and... Mathews: After a parent screamed at her, this first-grade teacher called the police

Washington Post

What should educators do when they are unfairly penalized for something they said? This is what has happened to Rafe Esquith, a nationally celebrated Los Angeles fifth-grade teacher. He is still banned from his classroom because he told a joke in class that few people would consider the least bit offensive.Read full article >>

Trump’s style is paying dividends — for now

Washington Post

Donald Trump is pure political id.I’ve described the reality TV star and front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in lots of different ways over the past few months — a car-accident candidate, the middle finger of the Republican base — but I think this one fits him best.Read full article >>

Here’s the speech Junior Seau’s daughter couldn’t give at Hall of Fame

Washington Post

Sydney Seau, the daughter of the late Junior Seau, presented her father for induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a moment that packed an emotional wallop. But it was also a controversial moment because the Hall of Fame limited Sydney’s comments, saying that players inducted posthumously were to be presented only with a video tribute, not a speech. It’s a policy that has been around for five years, but one that drew criticism because Seau was a beloved player who, it was later learned, was showing... Читать дальше...

Iraqi prime minister announces sweeping reform measures aimed at fighting corruption

Washington Post

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s prime minister announced on Sunday a series of drastic anti-corruption measures after weeks of protests against poor government services threatened to challenge his rule. In statements posted to his official Facebook and Twitter accounts, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said his government would change the way ministers are selected, end the expensive security details of senior officials, and reopen graft cases under the supervision of a high-level commission.Read full article >>

WorldViews: What Nagasaki looked like before and after the bomb

Washington Post

Three days after leveling the city of Hiroshima with a uranium atomic bomb known as a "Little Boy," the United States dropped the more menacing-sounding "Fat Man" over Nagasaki. It was Aug. 9, 1945. Some 40,000 to 80,000 people were killed, and much of the city was pulverized. Nuclear weapons would never again be used in warfare.Read full article >>

Expanding U.S. role in Iraq strains awkward alliance with Iran

Trump’s history of flippant misogyny

Washington Post

For decades, Donald Trump has made flippant misogyny as much a part of his trademark as his ostentatious lifestyle. Now, the former reality-television host and current front-runner in the polls for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination may be paying a price for a boorish barb that also renewed his party’s internal consternation over its recent history of alienating women voters. Tips on how to travel light without sacrificing comfort and style

Washington Post

Lee Abbamonte is known as the youngest American to have visited every country in the world. His second claim to fame should be “most efficient packer.” Unless he needs expedition gear or a suit, the 36-year-old New Yorker totes a 22-inch Osprey Meridian wheeled bag and a North Face backpack. The two pieces accompany him on trips short (a long weekend in Dewey Beach, Del.) and ultramarathon (two months circling the globe).Read full article >>
