Bats could be unlikely saviours of old buildings

Times of Malta

Demolition of old buildings often runs into opposition from nearby residents but in the case of a century-old house in Santa Venera, the ‘residents’ are of a different sort: a colony of roosting bats that appears to have settled in the house or its garden. The Planning Authority is considering an application to demolish two houses on Triq il-Lunzjata, preserving only their facades, as well as a large garden, to build a five-storey apartment block. Cultural heritage authorities have already expressed concern over the two properties... Читать дальше...

Healthcare workers deserve respect

Times of Malta

Workplace violence is never justified and should never be tolerated by those who have a responsibility to ensure that workers are safe when performing their duties. It is, therefore, disturbing to read that nurses and other healthcare professionals are occasionally subjected to violence by patients or their relatives. The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses has asked the management of Mater Dei Hospital to review procedures following an assault on ambulance staff. This newspaper has also reported that... Urban planning at its very worst - John Ebejer

Times of Malta

The Planning Authority is to decide on the proposed City Centre multi-use development at the former ITS site at St George’s Bay.   The proposed development has been criticised for many reasons, one of them being that it is not compliant with the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) policy. The concept of FAR is to create spaces for pedestrians. This is achieved by allowing higher development over part of the site, while retaining other parts as public open space. To rebut this criticism, the project architects drew up a document... Читать дальше...

Plumpton beats the buzzer as Saints wrest cup from Neptunes

Times of Malta

Ben Plumpton beat the buzzer with a sublime lob from the edge of the pool halfway that went over the incredulous Alan Borg Cole to topple Neptunes 10-9. We thought we had seen it all this summer! Again it was another match which kept the numerous crowd on the stands enthralled. The omens for a duel of this sort were on after Neptunes had wrested the league title from San Ġiljan last Sunday. Fortunes alternated with end-to-end play being the order of the day. San Ġiljan knew that it was a must-win match for them, not to finish empty-handed. Читать дальше...

Phallic and tragic - Martin Scicluna

Times of Malta

When I was privileged to be appointed as executive president of Din l-Art Ħelwa in 2001, my first battle against a plan to erect a high-rise building was directed at Tigné Point, which we regarded as intruding too closely on the world heritage city of Valletta as well as violating the skyline of Sliema. The battle was lost to the powerful financial and political forces big business ranged against us. That the development at Tigné Point was linked to the rapacious deal for the development of Manoel Island ... Читать дальше...

Airline fuel efficiency improves but lags industry goals - study

Times of Malta

Airline fuel efficiency on transatlantic flights has improved by one per cent a year since 2014 as carriers buy modern planes, but the industry still lags its own climate goals, a study released on Wednesday said. The industry's average fuel efficiency improved to 34 passenger kilometres per litre of fuel from 33 between 2014 and 2017 as carriers opted for modern aircraft with lower fuel burn and operated fuller planes, the study from the US-based International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) said.
