President's presence at solidarity march contested by Liam Debono's lawyers

Times of Malta

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca’s presence at a Valletta protest in solidarity with police officers last May has made it difficult for a young man accused of running over a police officer from getting a fair trial, lawyers for the defendant have argued. In a judicial protest filed on Wednesday, lawyers for Liam Debono said that in attending the protest, President Coleiro Preca had taken sides in a case which had yet to be heard in court. Mr Debono stands accused of the attempted murder of PC Simon Schembri... Читать дальше...

It is an image that became a symbol of the global financial crisis - about 20 bankers, their backs turned to the window, attending an emergency meeting at the London office of Lehman Brothers as the firm slid towards collapse. Gwion Moore, one of those pictured in the Reuters photograph taken on September 11, 2008, recalled how the growing sense of panic in financial markets contrasted with the mood inside the building at the time. "It was almost a festival atmosphere at the bank. We weren't doing any business. Читать дальше...

Watch: The man with keys to KITT, General Lee and other classic TV cars

Ta’ Braxia Cemetery lecture at Castello Lanzun

Times of Malta

Thousands of people pass by Ta’ Braxia Cemetery at Pietà and, unless there is one of the frequent bumper-to-bumper collisions near its entrance gate, very few rarely look beyond its surrounding walls.  Ta’ Braxia was commissioned at the time of the Crimean War, in 1856, as the existing burial grounds and cemeteries available for non-Catholics, in particular the Msida Bastion, had reached full capacity. The cemetery was designed by Luigi Emanuele Galizia (1830-1907) in 1856, the Works Department’s 25-year-old architect. Читать дальше...

'Too many chiefs, not enough Indians, and no arrows' - Yachting Malta chairman

Times of Malta

Yachting Malta needs to persuade all the stakeholders in the yachting industry to pull on the same rope, its new chairman John Huber told the Times of Malta. The yachting industry is notoriously fragmented, with various organisations vying rather than cooperating with each other. This is something Mr Huber is determined to tackle head on. “An authority such as Finance Malta has been so successful because everyone has been pulling on the same rope,” he said. “In yachting, way too many entities were born and died within a few years. Times of Malta

What would you do with a 2kg gold lunch box worth multimillions if you can’t find anyone to flog it to? For two Indian thieves, the solution while they were holed up in a Mumbai luxury hotel was quite simple: use it for their lunch. The two had stolen the box studded with diamonds, rubies and emeralds, and several other items just over a week before from the Nizam’s Museum in Hyderabad. The two ended up in Mumbai – hundreds of kilometres away - trying to find a buyer. The three-tiered box, made for the last royal ruler of Hyderabad... Читать дальше...
