Queen attends traditional CHOGM dinner in Malta

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall this evening attended the traditional Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting dinner at the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Attard. As the newest head of government, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau thanked the Queen for her “dedication and selfless service” which, he said, inspired all. Pope Francis calls Africa 'continent of hope'

Pope Francis has arrived in Uganda on the second leg of his Africa pilgrimage, honouring the country's most famous Christians and declaring Africa the "continent of hope". Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni, flanked by a military brass band as well as traditional drummers and dancers, welcomed Pope Francis as he landed at Entebbe International Airport. Climate change hub to facilitate access to hub for small states to be set up

Commonwealth leaders agreed today to set up a climate change hub which would facilitate access to funds for small states like Malta. Commonwealth general secretary Kamalesh Sharma said the hub was set up after small state leaders said they had experienced difficulty securing financial support. "These small states are often told about money but none of them know the number to dial," Mr Sharma, the outgoing secretary general, said. Hollande insisted on attending CHOGM climate change session despite terror attacks

French President Francois Hollande said today that despite the "terrible incidents in Paris", he insisted on attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta to discuss climate change. He was addressing a press conference at the Golden Sands resort where Commonwealth leaders are agreeing on an action plan on climate change. Rabat shop owner injured in hold-up

The 66-year-old owner of a shoe shop in Rabat has been hospitalised after he was injured in a hold-up this afternoon. The man’s condition is not yet known but he is not in critical condition, according to sources. The police said two hooded men armed with a knife entered the man’s shoe shop in College Street at around 4pm and stole a considerable amout of money. Sources said the police are on the lookout for the getaway car used in the hold-up. An inquiry is being held.

Man charged in Belgium with involvement in terrorist attacks

Belgian authorities have charged a man with involvement in "terrorist attacks" as investigations continue into the massacre in Paris two weeks ago. The federal prosecutor's office said the unidentified man was "charged with terrorist attacks and taking part in the activities of a terrorist group". The unidentified man was arrested in Brussels yesterday.

Simon Busuttil to address Vancouver conference on diabetes

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil left Malta for Vancouver today where he is addressing a conference on the fight against diabetes. The conference is organised by the Parliamentarians for Diabetes Global Network which brings together parliamentarians from around the world who are active in this fight. Dr Busuttil is vice-president of the network. Some 32 million people in Europe suffer from diabetes while millions more have the disease without knowing. Commonwealth elects first woman secretary general

Baroness Patricia Scotland from the UK was elected secretary general of the Commonwealth by leaders of the 53-nation bloc. She was one of three contenders for the post and will officially take office in April next year as the sixth Commonwealth secretary general. Born in Dominica, the 60-year-old, is a former attorney general in Britain and will be the first woman to occupy the post. Air Malta adds 15 flights to Gatwick

Air Malta has added 15 flights to London’s Gatwick airport this winter. The airline said the additional capacity will cover the peak periods in December and January and, starting on March 4, the airline added two additional weekly flights on Tuesday and Friday to a total of nine weekly flights.  The airline also flies daily to Heathrow airport.

Two Syrian men apprehended in Italy trying to catch a plane to Malta with false passports have denied any links to terrorist organisations. Testifying in court, Alali Faowaz, 30, said he had actually fled from jihadist extremists in Syria, according to Corriere di Bergamo. Faowaz and Hazem Alhamed, 19, were intercepted in Bergamo airport, Italy, last week. Suspicions were raised after pictures of people in combat were intercepted on one of the men's mobile phones. Three new parish priests appointed

Three new parish priests have been appointed. Fr Christian Anthony Borg OFM Conv is new parish priest of Burmarrad, Fr William Bartolo OFM Conv of Qawra and Fr Michael Attard of St Paul’s Bay. The Turkish foreign minister has said Turkey wants to overcome tensions with Moscow over the downing of a Russian warplane through "diplomacy". Crowds of smiling children waving Union flags greeted the Duchess of Cornwall today when she visited them at the Zejtun Primary School. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers at the gates of the school and stopped to speak to her young admirers as she made her way inside. Armed attackers have abducted five Polish seamen, including the captain and three officers, from a cargo ship on Nigerian waters. The government’s Consolidated Fund registered a deficit of €204.5 million between January and October, a positive change of €78.1 million. The National Statistics Office said that in the period under review, recurrent revenue was recorded at €2,766.1 million, up from €2,499.9 million last year. The major contributors to the comparative increase of 10.6 per cent were higher proceeds from customs and excise duties (€83.4 million) and income tax (€74.8 million).
