Joe Cassar's resignation yesterday was an earthquake in Maltese politics and a clear example of clean politics, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said this evening. Speaking on Dissett, Dr Busuttil said Dr Cassar understood his standards and took the honourable decision on his own. "In spite of denying the allegations made, he shouldered political responsibility so as not to be used to damage the party," Dr Busuttil said. Romanian government resigns over fatal nightclub blaze

Romanian prime minister Victor Ponta has announced the resignation of his government after huge protests in the wake of a nightclub fire that killed more than 30 people. Blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia today filed an appeal from a court judgement in which she was ordered to pay €3,000 in compensation to former journalist Julia Farrugia after being convicted of libel. Magistrate Francesco Depasquele ruled last month that statements repeatedly made by Ms Caruana Galizia and reader comments on her blog included insinuations which did not constitute fair comment. Cause of Russian plane crash looking like explosion - source close to investigation

The cause of a Russian plane crash in Egypt on Saturday is looking more like an explosion but it is not clear whether it was linked to fuel or engine trouble or a bomb, an Egyptian source close to the investigation of the black boxes said today. "It is believed to be an explosion but what kind is not clear. There is an examination of the sand at the crash site to try and determine if it was a bomb," the source told Reuters. Finland to launch national emojis including rockers and sauna-goers

Finland is launching a series of national emojis that include people sweating in saunas, classic Nokia phones and heavy metal head-bangers. Petra Theman, from the Finnish Foreign Ministry, said the emojis will be released as a way to promote the country's image abroad and are based on themes associated with Finland. She said that emojis suit the character of the traditionally reticent Finns "who only speak when it's necessary". The murderer of lawyer Margaret Mifsud, who was found dead in her car at Qalet Marku in Baħar ic-Caghaq on April 19, 2012, is still on the run, the accused’s lawyer, Martin Testaferrata Moroni Viani said in court this morning. Police shouted at father and daughter for entering station through wrong door - witness

The daughter of a man accused of causing a disturbance at the Żabbar police station told a court today that the police officers started shouting when they entered the station from the wrong door. The girl, who is a minor, was testifying before Magistrate Saviour Demicoli in the case of Josmar Agius, 44, of Marsaxlokk, who is pleading not guilty to threatening the police at the Żabbar police station in June 2013 and hindering them from carrying out their duties. Bodies of 33 Egypt plane crash victims identified in Russia

The number of plane crash victims identified by Russian families has risen to 33 as rescue teams in Egypt combed the Sinai desert for more remains and parts of fuselage. The Metrojet Airbus A321-200 carrying Russian holidaymakers from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt back to Russia's second-largest city of St Petersburg crashed over the Sinai Peninsula early on Saturday, killing all 224 people on board. 2012 murder victim not yet declared dead

Matthew Zahra, who went missing in 2012 and whose remains were found buried in a field in Birzebbuga a year later, has not yet been declared dead and his remains are still in possession of the courts. New monument arrives in Castille Square

Castille Square's new monument, to be inaugurated during next week's Valletta Summit for Migration, arrived in the square on a large truck this afternoon. The monument was announced by the government last month. The bianco carrara marble sculpture, designed by Vince Briffa is in the form of a “knot”, symbolising the close geographical link between Europe and Africa as well as the “entanglement” of these two continents over migration. A claim by a Libyan that it had taken him three days to register his company in Malta alerted a police inspector that something was not in order, a court heard today. Inspector Frankie Sammut, from the Immigration Department was testifying in the compilation of evidence against accountant and auditor Joe Sammut. The share index closed in positive territory for the third consecutive session as it edged 0.33 per cent higher to 4,406.858 points – the highest level since mid-May 2008. Valletta striker Federico Falcone has received a two-match ban following his sending-off in yesterday’s two-all draw against Mosta. EasyJet to fly Malta-Geneva service

EasyJet is to fly a new route between Malta and Geneva from the coming summer. The new summer service commences on March 29. Flights will operate twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays with fares starting from €31.49 one way per person. EasyJet launched services to Malta in 2008 and operates flights to London Gatwick, Belfast, Manchester, Milan Malpensa, Naples, Newcastle and Rome Fiumicino. An Eastern Imperial Eagle has seen seen  in Malta, possibly for the first time, BirdLife said.  It roosted in Malta last night. Sporting a satellite tracking device, the massive bird is thought to originate from a conservation project in Austria. The eagle was spotted over Buskett yesterday early afternoon. An unusual species for the Central Mediterranean, Eastern Imperial Eagles breed in Eastern Europe and Asia and normally migrate over Balkan countries and the Middle East to winter in East Africa, Arabia and India. Number of accidents at work unchanged from last year

842 persons were involved in a non-fatal accidents at their place of work in the third quarter of this year, practically the same number as last year. The majority of  accidents occurred in the manufacturing sector (21.4 per cent). Another 132 or 15.7 per cent occurred in construction followed by transport and storage (14.6 per cent). Government-MAM make progress in talks

The Ministry of Health and the MAM doctors' union have reported progress in talks on a number of issues over which the MAM had threatened industrial action. In a joint statement, the two sides said they are now close to each other's positions.
