Monsoon fury in 8 states leaves 470 dead

In the middle of coronavirus pandemic, the monsoon has unleashed its fury in eight states causing more than 470 deaths due to floods and landslides, with the highest toll being recorded in West Bengal, Assam and Gujarat. This is the second disaster striking India since March this year resulting in deployment of at least 70 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for rescue and relief.

When 42-year-old Deepak Paliwal, a pharma consultant in the UK, signed up as a volunteer for the Covid-19 vaccine trial at Oxford University, he found little support among friends and family. “My family, including my wife, was concerned about my decision. I was told not to become a guinea pig. But this is something I had to do to help the world fight this pandemic, even if it meant risking my life,” said Paliwal.

Covid: No community spread yet, clarifies Centre

The health ministry on Tuesday reiterated that there are “clusters of cases and pockets of localised transmission” of Covid-19, amid reports of officials in some states saying that community transmission has taken place. “WHO does not define community transmission. July’s count crossed 6 lakh on Tuesday, going past the cumulative caseload of 5.9 lakh recorded in the country till June 30. No Amarnath Yatra this year amid covid crisis

There will be no Amarnath Yatra this year, in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis in Jammu & Kashmir. This was decided on Tuesday by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) headed by Lt Governor GC Murmu. The board decided to facilitate live and virtual darshan of the morning and evening aartis. The yatra was supposed to have begun on Tuesday and ended on August 3.
