This week's question: A Utah mom gave her 6-year-old her Amazon password to order a single Barbie doll as a reward, and then got a delivery for $350 worth of Barbies and other toys. Trade talks between the U.S. and China ended Thursday with no sign of progress, raising concerns that the trade war between the world's two largest economies is poised to escalate. The White House said the two sides had "exchanged views on how to achieve fairness, balance, and reciprocity in the economic relationship," and China called the discussions "constructive, candid." No further talks are scheduled, however. The meeting ended hours after 25 percent tariffs on another $16 billion worth of Chinese goods took effect... Читать дальше...

Attorney General Jeff Sessions pushed back against criticism by President Trump, saying Thursday that the Justice Department would not be "improperly influenced by political considerations." During an interview that aired hours earlier on Fox & Friends, Trump criticized Sessions for recusing himself from the federal investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion by Trump associates. Trump said Sessions "took the job and then he said, 'I'm going to recuse myself.' I said... Читать дальше...
If President Trump calling people who testify against him "rats," heaping praise on those who don't "break," suggesting "flipping" be "outlawed," and demanding personal "loyalty" from law enforcement leaders sounds like mafia talk — and several people have noticed the similarities — well, it isn't just critics saying that.

On Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported that National Enquirer publisher David Pecker had been granted immunity by federal prosecutors, presumably to spill the dirt on the various porn actresses and Playboy models who were paid hush money after saying they had extramarital affairs with Pecker's friend President Trump. In his trial for an enormous spree of tax fraud and other financial crimes, which ended in a conviction on eight counts, President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was clearly angling for a pardon. Unlike several of Trump's other criminal associates (Michael Cohen, Rick Gates, Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos) Manafort did not plead guilty and turn state's evidence for a reduced sentence, and didn't even mount a defense in his trial.

On Wednesday, Senate Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) abruptly canceled a vote on a bipartisan election security bill that proponents, including lead sponsors Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Sen. Amy Kobuchar (D-Minn.), had expected to sail through to a full Senate vote in October. Blunt cited a lack of support from state election officials and Republican colleagues, though the sponsors said it had ample bipartisan support to pass. On Thursday, Yahoo News reported that the bill "has... Читать дальше...
The murder of University of Iowa sophomore Mollie Tibbetts by an immigrant farm worker was abominable and tragic. But it is absolutely shameful that President Trump and other restrictionists have seized on this incident to justify the collective punishment and demonization of all unauthorized immigrants.

The romantic comedy, long deemed dead, is poised for a comeback. The box-office success of Crazy Rich Asians — making a $34 million debut after projections held it at $18 million — and Netflix's recent release of the well-received rom-com To All the Boys I've Loved Before have proven there's an obvious, powerful hunger for more movies in the long-dormant genre. But they also show there's value in not just reviving the genre, but improving it.
