The film follows a budding fashion designer named Hannah (Hadley Robinson) whose unresolved childhood trauma begins to literally grow into a monster bent on ruining her life. Is it subtle? Absolutely not. Then again, how many evil-twin horror-comedies are?

How did one discredited biography ignite one of America’s most memorable moral panics? That’s the central mystery that the new documentary Satan Wants You seeks to unravel. The film debuted Saturday as part of SXSW’s Documentary Spotlight and tells the story of Michelle Remembers—an account that claimed to share repressed memories from Canadian woman Michelle Smith’s childhood, with help from her psychiatrist Lawrence “Larry” Pazder.

In 1986, the Goddess of Pop showed up to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the 58th Academy Awards dressed in what would become one of the most recognizable gowns in Oscars history and stole the show in the process—proving, as she would two years later when she won Best Actress for Moonstruck, that the Academy should not have underestimated her. We should all be ashamed of ourselves. It is the year 2023, and Amy Adams—ginger goddess, acting extraordinaire—still has no Oscars. I don’t know what the general public could’ve done to prevent this. (Show up at every Academy member’s door to persuade them? Not a bad idea) But after almost 25 years of killing it in her field, the lack of recognition Adams has earned from the Academy is reprehensible, foolish, and a downright assault on humankind.

Daniel Kwan, who co-directed Best Picture hopeful Everything Everywhere All At Once alongside Daniel Scheinert, has opened up about backlash against the film and other nominees ahead of the 2023 Oscars on Sunday night.
