Armenian ombudsman visiting police precincts after clashes in Yerevan
Representatives of the human rights defender’s office have been visiting police precincts since Saturday morning to meet with individuals detained in the wake of the Friday night clashes in Yerevan.
Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan has been also reported on arbitrary detentions and violence against citizens, as well as law enforcement authorities’ failure to provide means of communication to those under custody.
Also, attorneys were reported to have been banned from entering police precincts.
“Police officers do not have any right to bar an attorney’s entrance into a police station or a detention cell. A failure to meet this requirement constitutes a serious brrach of law. The visits aim first of all to ensure the exercise of this right,” reads an official statement issued earlier today.
