A Lakota student’s traditional feather plume was cut off her cap during her high school commencement this week in the northwestern New Mexico community of Farmington. The Tri-City Record reports that faculty members approached Genesis White Bull and confiscated her cap on Monday night during the national anthem. The cap was decorated with beadwork and a plume. Meteorologists say exceptional windstorms that may leave some Houston residents without power for weeks left damage in their wake comparable to that caused by a hurricane. Janice Maldonado, a National Weather Service meteorologist, says the storms that barreled through Houston Thursday are the most significant in the area since Hurricane Alicia in 1983. Mothers of two children with disabilities are suing an Indiana agency in federal court over changes to Medicaid attendant care services they say violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. A state agency proposed the changes as part of a cost-savings plan after it underestimated its future Medicaid expenditures by nearly $1 billion. A Taliban spokesman says that several gunmen opened fire in central Afghanistan, killing at least four people, including three foreign nationals. He says four suspects were arrested at the scene in Bamyan province, a major tourist area, and an investigation was underway. The Spanish government said that three Spanish tourists had died in the attack and that at least one more had been injured. The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. A federal judge handed down the sentenced for 44-year-old David DePape on Friday. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term.
