Arrests of US tourists in Turks and Caicos for carrying ammunition prompts plea from three governors

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Five Americans are facing prison sentences of up to 12 years in the Turks and Caicos Islands on charges they illegally carried ammunition while in the popular, upscale tourist destination about 600 miles southeast of Miami. Three of the arrests have prompted pleas for mercy from the governors of Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In a letter Tuesday to the islands’ governor, they said the three men charged from their states maintained they inadvertently took ammunition with them on vacation. They did not have firearms. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Prosecutors say former South African President Jacob Zuma will go on trial for corruption next April. It'll be four years after he was officially charged with taking bribes in connection with a multi-billion-dollar arms deal and 20 years after he was first implicated. Zuma is charged with corruption, racketeering, fraud, tax evasion and money laundering in relation to a huge deal the South African government signed to revamp its armed forces in 1999. The charges relate to a time before he was president. Читать дальше...

House Republicans ditch their day jobs to stand with Trump, while legislating languishes

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Leaving Washington behind, prominent far-right House Republicans who have pushed this Congress into chaos showed up at Donald Trump’s hush money trial. They stood outside Trump Tower filming their support for the indicted former president. They filed into the Manhattan courthouse “standing back and standing by,” as Rep. Matt Gaetz put it, invoking Trump’s call to the extremist Proud Boys. And they commandeered the spotlight to rant against what they called the “kangaroo court” and the “political persecution” of Trump. Читать дальше...

Philadelphia still the 6th-biggest U.S. city, but San Antonio catching up, census data shows

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

New federal estimates show Philadelphia remains the nation’s sixth-most-populous city, despite a decline in population throughout the pandemic. But the U.S. Census Bureau data out this week also shows San Antonio, Texas, could surpass Philadelphia in the coming years if trends continue. The data shows that Philadelphia lost 3.3% of its population — roughly 53,000 residents — between April 2020 and July 2023, dropping the city’s overall population to about 1,550,542. San Antonio, meanwhile, saw the... Читать дальше...

United Airlines says it has regained some privileges that were suspended after problem flights

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

United Airlines says it can plan for growth again as federal regulators continue their review of the airline's operations. The airline lost some privileges earlier this year after a series of various problems on flights, including an engine fire and a tire falling off a plane after takeoff. The airline said Thursday that the Federal Aviation Administration is letting the airline resume planning for new routes and additional planes. The FAA says, however, that it hasn't given final approval for United to increase its fleet or add routes. Читать дальше...

Advocate Michael Carey says Parker got inches from his face Wednesday and yelled “I don't care” before grabbing him by his shoulders and shoving him twice. Carey said he approached Parker, a Brooklyn Democrat, before a committee meeting about cosponsoring a piece of legislation. Parker has had past trouble with the law. In 2005 he was arrested and charged for punching a traffic agent who gave him a ticket. Читать дальше...

South Africa urges UN's top court to order cease-fire in Gaza to shield citizens in Rafah

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

South Africa has urged the United Nations’ top court to order a cease-fire in Gaza during hearings over emergency measures to halt Israel’s military operation in the enclave’s southern city of Rafah. It was the third time the International Court of Justice held hearings on the conflict in Gaza since South Africa filed proceedings in December accusing Israel of genocide. South Africa told the panel of 15 international judges they must order Israel to “totally and unconditionally withdraw” from the Gaza Strip. Читать дальше...

US military says Gaza pier project is complete and aid will soon flow as Israel-Hamas war rages

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The U.S. military has finished installing a floating pier in the Gaza Strip. Officials said Thursday that they're poised to begin ferrying badly needed humanitarian aid into the enclave besieged over seven months of intense fighting in the Israel-Hamas war. The final construction sets up a complicated delivery process more than two months after U.S. President Joe Biden ordered it to help starving Palestinians as Israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy fighting prevent food and other supplies from making it into Gaza. House to vote on requiring delivery of bombs to Israel in GOP-led rebuke of Biden policies

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

House Republicans plan to deliver a rebuke to President Joe Biden for putting a pause on a shipment of bombs to Israel that could be used in an assault on Rafah. They are voting Thursday on a bill that has practically no chance of being enacted but puts pressure on Democrats as it mandates delivery of the weapons. The Biden administration is seeking to discourage Israel from its offensive on the crowded southern Gaza city of Rafah. This month, it put on hold a weapons shipment of 3,500 bombs. Republicans... Belarus targets opposition activists with raids and property seizures

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Authorities in Belarus have announced raids and the seizure of property of 104 opposition activists who have fled the country. The action announced on Thursday was the latest step in the crackdown on dissent that has continued unabated for nearly four years. Belarus’ authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko unleashed the crackdown in August 2020. That's when mass protests erupted against his rule following his disputed reelection that the opposition and the West have denounced as rigged. More than 35,000 people have been arrested...
