Immigrants battle deportation fears in Harvey's aftermath

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

HOUSTON (AP) — Alain Cisneros walked past thousands of cots filled with storm victims at the Houston convention center holding up a poster with the words, "Do you have questions?" written in Spanish in bold black letters. He pulled up a chair next to a woman from Honduras and tried to deliver a reassuring message as the 23-year-old recounted in an exhausted voice how waters rose to her chest in her Houston apartment, forcing her to wade to safety with her three young children. Ricxy Sanchez listened... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DUMMERSTON, Vt. (AP) — Political activist Peter Diamondstone, who helped found the Vermont political party that first launched Bernie Sanders for office in the 1970s, has died at age 82. Diamondstone, a perennial political candidate and the co-founder in 1970 of the anti-war Liberty Union Party, defined as a nonviolent socialist party, died Wednesday, his daughter said. "Peter's life of service in the struggle to protect human rights and our nation's Constitution began at an early age and continued through his last weeks," his family said. Читать дальше...

Doctors call victims of New Mexico library shooting heroes

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Alexis Molina took a bullet to the chest, just above her heart, and was shot once in each leg as a gunman opened fire inside public library in New Mexico, but trauma surgeons at the Texas hospital where she is recovering said Thursday that all she could think about was making sure her little brother was safe. The doctors told reporters that Molina, 20, is expected to make a full recovery, and they described her and fellow library patron Howard Jones as heroes. Jones, who was at the library with his granddaughter, was shot in the arm. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke has given athletic director Kevin White a one-year contract extension through the 2021-22 academic year. The school announced the extension Thursday for the 66-year-old who is beginning his 10th year at the school. Terms were not disclosed, which is customary at the private institution. University President Vincent Price calls White "far and away the best athletic director in the business." Duke has won seven NCAA championships since White's arrival in the summer of 2008... Giants get Posey back, lose Bumgarner to illness

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Buster Posey is back! He won't be catching Madison Bumgarer! And so it goes … Bumgarner will not start Thursday night's series opener against the Cardinals because of the flu. Matt Cain will go instead, four nights after he had an eight-run inning against the Diamondbacks. Manager Bruce Bochy said Bumgarner had not felt well for a couple of days, rallied, then worsened. He is not at the park now but is expected come later to be seen by the medical staff. Читать дальше...

Federer comes back to edge Youzhny for 2nd 5-set US Open win

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK — Given that Roger Federer entered Thursday with a 16-0 career record against his opponent, Mikhail Youzhny, and a 16-0 mark in the U.S. Open’s second round, one might have thought that their meeting at that stage in Flushing Meadows would have been no contest at all. Think again. Federer set aside an uncharacteristic 68 unforced errors and what appeared to be a bad back, managing to pull out his second five-set victory in a row at the U.S. Open by coming back to edge Youzhny 6-1... ‘Oppressive heat’ about to scorch Bay Area; Livermore may hit 116

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The good people of Livermore, under siege from the weather gods, retreated to their air-conditioned malls, senior centers and multiplexes on Thursday until this triple-digit temperature thing eases up. Since it might not do that for some time — perhaps a week or so — Tony Aranda figures he will be playing a lot of pool inside the Livermore Senior Center. “I’m old, but I’m not crazy,” said Aranda, who was trying to get the 15 ball to drop into the side pocket, unsuccessfully. Lawsuit over Trump's 1st attempt to ban travel is settled

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Foreigners who were barred from entering the U.S. during President Donald Trump's first attempt to ban travel from seven Muslim-majority nations will get government help reapplying for visas under a lawsuit settlement reached Thursday. Civil rights lawyers and the Trump administration announced the deal during a conference call in federal court in Brooklyn, one scene of the legal battle over the treatment of hundreds of travelers who were processed at U.S. airports over a chaotic weekend in January.

US shutters Russia’s San Francisco consulate in retaliation

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The diplomats at the Russian Consulate in San Francisco have been known to bring plates of delicacies and vodka shots to neighborhood block parties and, for the last few years, inflated a big snowman out front at Christmas. The gestures of goodwill, though, will be sidelined amid escalating tension between the U.S. and Russia. The Trump administration, in a move reminiscent of the Cold War, ordered the shutdown by Saturday of the stately brick building on Green Street in Cow Hollow. Читать дальше...

Lakers fined $500K by NBA for tampering involving George

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

New Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka’s contact with Paul George’s agent violated the NBA’s antitampering rule and resulted in a $500,000 fine for Los Angeles on Thursday. The league said a law firm’s independent investigation didn’t find evidence of an agreement or an understanding that the Lakers would sign or acquire George, who was with the Indiana Pacers at the time. George later was traded to Oklahoma City. “We respect and accept the NBA’s decision regarding this matter,” Pelinka said in a statement. Читать дальше...

US Sen. Pat Toomey takes shots at Trump on election, pardon

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey is taking several shots at President Donald Trump. Toomey says he hopes investigators get to the bottom of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also pans Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and criticizes the Republican president's pardon of former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio (ahr-PY'-oh). Toomey spoke Thursday at a televised town hall. Protesters outside call the town hall a sham... Читать дальше...

Rescuers seek anyone, alive or dead, left in floodwaters

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

HOUSTON — Rescuers began a block-by-block search of tens of thousands of Houston homes Thursday, pounding on doors and shouting as they looked for anyone — alive or dead — who might have been left behind in Harvey’s fetid floodwaters, which have now heavily damaged more than 37,000 homes and destroyed nearly 7,000 statewide. More than 200 firefighters, police officers and members of an urban search-and-rescue team fanned out across the Meyerland neighborhood for survivors or bodies. Читать дальше...

Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic debut a different world

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BOCA RATON, Fla. — They’re expecting a big crowd at Florida Atlantic for Lane Kiffin’s first game as coach, with a sellout of the Owls’ on-campus stadium seeming like a possibility. That would mean a crowd of about 30,000. Let that serve as yet another example of how it’s all different for the former Raiders coach now. FAU drew a total of 60,000 fans to its stadium for six home games last season — combined. Alabama averaged more than 100,000 for its home games a year ago... Читать дальше...

T.J. Ward’s teammates stumped by reported trade talks

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The notion of the Denver Broncos and strong safety T.J. Ward parting ways isn’t sitting well with his teammates. Von Miller said at the team’s kickoff luncheon that he was taken aback by an NFL Network report this week that the Broncos are talking with other teams about Ward, who’s entering the final year of his contract. “I thought it was fake news,” Miller said. “I mean, I didn’t think — it’s serious like that? It can’t be that serious. T.J.’s been a great player for us, but it’s the National Football League.

Milwaukee sheriff, Trump supporter Clarke resigns

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The tough-talking sheriff of Milwaukee County, David Clarke, resigned without explanation Thursday, capping a tumultuous year for the divisive, provocative lawman whose unabashed support for President Donald Trump and in-your-face personality earned him a national following among some conservatives. Clarke submitted his resignation in a one-sentence letter to the county clerk that gave no reason for his departure more than a year before his term is up. In a brief statement a couple of hours later, Clarke also didn't explain. Читать дальше...

A’s rookie Matt Chapman adjusts at plate, stars afield

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SEATTLE — When the A’s ask something of Matt Chapman, they get it and a whole lot more. The rookie came up just 10 weeks ago and he’s making an impact on both offense and defense with 11 homers, an increasingly improved approach at the plate, and some of the most sensational fielding around. “His defensive metrics are as good as we could have possibly imagined,” A’s general manager David Forst said. “Every step of the way in the minor leagues, everyone who played with him thought he was going to be this good ... 1 Antiabortion law: A federal judge has blocked Texas from enforcing new antiabortion measures that the Republican-controlled Legislature passed in response to the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the state’s far more sweeping law. The temporary injunction issued Thursday by Austin-based U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel stops Texas from banning a common second-trimester abortion procedure. Similar bans have also been halted in Alabama, Kansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The Texas version was set to take effect Friday.

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge has fined an anti-abortion activist and two of his attorneys nearly $200,000 after videos that the judge had barred from release appeared on the attorneys' website. U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick said Thursday he hoped the sanction against David Daleiden and his attorneys, Steve Cooley and Brentford Ferreira, would ensure future compliance with his injunction. Daleiden's Center for Medical Progress has released secretly recorded videos it says show Planned... Читать дальше...

Has ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ Been Worth It?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Now that “Twin Peaks: The Return” is coming to a close, we can begin to consider whether it was worth it to continue the story, 25 years after the original “Twin Peaks.” For Showtime and many critics, the answer is a simple yes. The series has been averaging two million viewers per week across all platforms, taking into account weekly Nielsen data, streaming and on demand viewing. That’s not an especially impressive number compared to something like “Game of Thrones,” which brought in 16.5 million overall with its Season 7 finale... Читать дальше...

A Cord Cutters Guide to the 2017 Football Season

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Labor Day means beaches, barbecues and yelling at the ref who missed that obvious pass interference call. It’s been a very long few months, but football is finally back. But with the rapidly changing TV landscape, watching your favorite team isn’t so straightforward anymore, particularly for the millions of Americans that have opted to cut the cord in favor of cable alternatives, like YouTube TV and Sling TV, that have come online in recent years. Fortunately, TheWrap is here to help.

1 Cluster bombs: Casualties from cluster munitions, internationally outlawed weapons that kill indiscriminately, more than doubled in 2016 compared with the previous year, a disarmament group that monitors the bombs’ use reported on Thursday. The Geneva-based Cluster Munition Coalition said nearly 1,000 people had been killed or injured by the bombs, which are banned by international treaty. Most of the increase was attributed to the war in Syria, where, the group said, Syrian government forces began... Читать дальше...

Justin Upton is eager to get back into a playoff race. The Los Angeles Angels badly need another big bat to bolster their postseason push. After the Angels acquired the outfielder in a late-season trade Thursday, Upton also has at least one month in Orange County to decide whether to make it his long-term home, as he has an option for four more years.
