Renato Nuñez, pitchers expected to join A’s on Tuesday

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SEATTLE — Triple-A Nashville’s season ends Monday, so Oakland’s next batch of September callups are expected to join the club Tuesday. Among them: slugger Renato Nuñez, who is second in the minors with 32 homers, and several pitchers. Daniel Mengden is likely to be one - the A’s have a doubleheader Saturday and need another starter - and long reliever Josh Smith also is a good bet. “We’re still kind of talking about it a little bit, depending on how much pitching we need,” manager Bob Melvin said. 49ers claim DT Xavier Cooper; fill out practice squad

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A day after releasing Quinton Dial, placing Chris Jones on injured reserve, and acknowledging Ronald Blair won’t be ready for the start of the season, the 49ers addressed their interior defensive line depth by claiming Xavier Cooper off waivers from the Browns, a source said. Cooper, 25, was a 2015 third-round pick of the Browns, who waived him Saturday. He will likely fill the spot of Blair, who made the initial 53-man roster but is expected to be placed on short-term injured reserve with a thumb injury. Читать дальше...

Scorching heat stokes wildfires

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LOS ANGELES — Smoke filled the sky and ash rained down across Los Angeles on Sunday from a destructive wildfire — one of several blazes that sent thousands fleeing homes across the U.S. West during a blistering holiday heat wave. In Oregon, crews were rescuing about 140 hikers forced to spend the night in the woods after fire broke out along the popular Columbia River Gorge trail. Search and rescue crews air-dropped supplies on Saturday as flames prevented the hikers’ escape.

Scorching heat or not, Pleasanton’s annual Highland Games still go on

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

It cooled off to a sensible 105 degrees in Pleasanton Sunday, which made wearing a woolen kilt downright comfortable, almost. Hundreds of men were wearing them, and thousands more were staring at the men who were. That seems to be one of the main things to do at the annual Scottish Highland Gathering and Games at the Pleasanton fairgrounds, in addition to having contests to see who can throw tree trunks, hammers and giant rocks the farthest. Kilts are big business at Scottish games. Читать дальше...

Ghostly, translucent lobster hauled from ocean off Maine

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

CUMBERLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine lobstermen Alex Todd has hauled in blue lobsters and even some lobsters that were half blue, or half orange. But he says those don't compare on the scale of weirdness to the translucent crustacean that he recently pulled up in a trap. The lobster that Todd caught on Aug. 24 is a ghostly, pale blue. It almost looks to be transparent. Todd, from Chebeague Island, said he knew when he saw the translucent lobster in his trap alongside mottled green and brown lobsters that... Читать дальше...

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Yale University is holding a dedication ceremony for a residential college that's being renamed in honor of a pioneering mathematician. To understand rising inequality, consider the janitors at Kodak and Apple, then and now

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Corporations across America have flocked to a new management theory: Focus on core competence and outsource the rest. The approach has made companies more nimble and more productive, and delivered huge profits for shareholders. It has also fueled inequality and helps explain why many working-class Americans are struggling even in an ostensibly healthy economy.
