(AP) — According to a police report a Reynolds Community College professor allegedly touched a 24-year-old woman's buttocks before she slashed him with a box cutter. The report says Burfield tried to leave when the professor grabbed her, then reached into her purse for a box cutter and slashed him on the back of the head.

Environmental groups had argued that the thorny skate's population loss in the northwest Atlantic Ocean was considerable enough to afford it protections set aside for endangered animals. Animal Welfare Institute and Defenders of Wildlife called on the federal government to offer the fish Endangered Species Act listing, which could've led to habitat protection or new fishing restrictions. The skates live in the Gulf of Maine, a key commercial fishing area, and the call to protect them generated some resistance from fishing groups.

(AP) — Washington state's Department of Fish and Wildlife opened up a highly anticipated one-day season for smelt fishing on the lower Cowlitz River — but maybe no one told the smelt. Saturday's short season was intended to serve as research fishery, but also to keep a minimal connection between the public and once-plentiful species. The decision to open the season came after officials tracked catch rates in a commercial test fishery in the lower Columbia.

CHICAGO (AP) — A newspaper report says a suburban Chicago legislator works at a law firm that's been paid $9 million over five years for doing legal work for state agencies, government workers' pension funds and local governments. The firm has also worked on budgets the Oak Park legislator voted on, including for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

(AP) — A 16-year-old boy has been rescued from Lake St. Clair by the Coast Guard after losing control of the SUV he was driving and landing in the water off Grosse Pointe Shores. Muhammad Ali's son, who bears the boxing great's name, was detained by immigration officials at a Florida airport and questioned about his ancestry and religion in what amounted to profiling, a family friend said Saturday. (AP) — Arkansas State University trustees have approved an updated collaboration agreement with its partner on the launch of its Mexico campus.
