Sheriff’s deputy hit by bus at Santa Rita Jail dies

An Alameda County sheriff’s deputy who was struck by an inmate transport bus at Santa Rita Jail died Thursday, officials said. Deputy Michael Foley, 60, suffered extensive head trauma when he was hit by a bus driven by another sheriff’s deputy in the jail parking lot in Dublin at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. The state Senate approved a bill Thursday that would end the state's status as the only one in the U.S. that allows a judge to override a jury when sentencing capital murder cases.
