Northbound Highway 101 closed in Palo Alto after fatal crash A fatal crash blocked all lanes of northbound Highway 101 in Palo Alto Thursday morning, authorities said. A motorcyclist was killed in the crash, reported just south of the Oregon Expressway about 9:15 a.m., said Officer Art Montiel, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The truck and Chevy drivers immediately stopped and tried to render CPR, Montiel said, but the motorcyclist died at the scene.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A new memorial for the victims of the 1966 University of Texas tower shooting is etched with a word that Latin professors say is an embarrassing mistake that's literally set in stone. The granite memorial unveiled this week honors victims on the 50th anniversary of sniper Charles Whitman climbing atop the 27-story clock tower and opening fire. Correcting the memorial is no problem, said Erica Saenz, a UT associate vice president of diversity and community engagement.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Despite the start of monsoon season, most of New Mexico is under moderate drought thanks to high temperatures last month and below average rainfall. The drought conditions are returning a year after the state received a good amount of rainfall. At the start of winter, there was excitement across New Mexico as forecasters talked about the possibilities of a wet winter thanks to El Nino, a warming trend in the central tropical Pacific that alters weather patterns worldwide.
Just hours before Trump's rally Friday night, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine was to talk about Hillary Clinton's job plans at a brewery in the Democratic stronghold of Milwaukee. Investigators in the U.S. and Canada are looking into a crash in the Canadian province of Newfoundland in which a driver was killed by an exploding air bag inflator made by ARC Automotive Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn. Authorities say the Canadian driver was killed July 8 when the ruptured inflator sent metal shrapnel into the passenger cabin of a 2009 Hyundai Elantra.
