Calif. Uber drivers get class-action status in employment suit

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A lawsuit that threatens Uber’s business model gained significant momentum on Tuesday when a federal judge granted it class-action status. U.S. District Judge Edwin Chen ruled that California drivers seeking to be reclassified as employees could proceed as a class-action case, with some limits. Employee status could require Uber to pay unemployment, workers’ compensation, minimum wage and overtime, as well as give the drivers the right to unionize. “The mountain of evidence we submitted to the court ... State ballot initiative fee raised to $2,000 to prevent mischief

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Tuesday that raises the fee for filing ballot initiatives from $200 to $2,000 in an effort to discourage what has become a plethora of over-the-top measures in recent years. The $200 filing fee, unchanged since 1943, has been too small of a price to pay for satirists and cranks intent on using the initiative process for making outrageous statements. A Southern California woman countered with the “Intolerant Jackass Act,” requiring people who propose measures to murder... Читать дальше...

Obama buys out cinnamon rolls at Anchorage cafe

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Obama paid a surprise visit Tuesday to Snow City Cafe, a hopping brunch spot in downtown Anchorage with a bit of hipster flair. Dressed down in a casual coat and sunglasses, he strolled past throngs of cheering crowds into the cafe, where it took just a few seconds for the cinnamon rolls to catch his eye. Obama may have worked up an appetite on the hike because, a few hours later, his motorcade pulled up to Sweet Darlings, a candy and ice cream shop in Seward.

PG&E wants to boost revenue by $2.7 billion, pushing up bills

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Tuesday asked state regulators for permission to collect an extra $2.7 billion from its customers over the course of three years, using the money for technology upgrades and improved disaster response. If the California Public Utilities Commission approves it, monthly bills for a typical PG&E residential customer would rise about $4 in 2017. California utilities regularly file three-year revenue requests, formally known as general rate cases, with the commission. Читать дальше...

Senate leader: Not enough votes to defund Planned Parenthood

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate's top Republican is conceding that his party will have to await the next president before it can cut off federal funds that go to Planned Parenthood, prompting heated rebuffs from conservatives. "Senate leadership first told us we needed the majority before we could act on conservative principles," said Phil Novack, spokesman for Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a presidential candidate who this summer accused McConnell of lying. The GOP effort to block Planned Parenthood's funds was triggered by videos... Читать дальше...

NEW YORK — Caroline Wozniacki crashed John Isner’s post-match news conference, needling her good friend for arriving late to his interview session and delaying the start of hers. The fourth-seeded Wozniacki was in quite a hurry Tuesday, when she needed just 67 minutes to win at the U.S. Open against an opponent making her Grand Slam debut. Sixth-seeded Lucie Safarova, who pushed Williams to three sets in the French Open final, was upset by 37th-ranked Lesia Tsurenko earlier Tuesday. Obama visits receding glacier in Alaska to highlight climate change

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Standing in front of a gravelly creek bed, he said that when glaciers retreat, the water runs down and raises sea levels, altering the flora and fauna of the park. On the second day of a trip devoted to highlighting the effects of climate change, the president traveled here by helicopter from Anchorage and went on to take a short hike up to the face of Exit Glacier, a massive 2-mile-long ice block that flows down from the larger Harding Icefield. “Climate change is the primary driver for the retreat,” said Deborah Kurtz... The party’s still going strong for Jackson

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Wanda Jackson is the queen of rockabilly and one of the greatest American pop musicians of all time. The Oklahoma native grew up listening to music by greats such as Bob Wills and Tex Williams, and got a radio gig after winning a talent contest. Auto sales a surprising bright spot in economy

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Domestic automakers reported surprisingly strong results on Tuesday for August sales in the United States, defying analysts’ expectations of losses in a month that had turmoil in the stock markets and a calendar quirk that had been expected to depress sales. Ford and Fiat Chrysler reported unexpected gains, while General Motors fell slightly but avoided the larger loss that analysts had predicted. Ford reported that sales increased 5 percent for the month, compared with the period a year ago... Читать дальше...
