Retailers and technology companies led the way as the market erased some early losses. On Wednesday: The S&P 500 index picked up 8.85 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,733.29. Uber valued at about $62B in new offer to buy company stock

Three investors are looking to buy stakes in Uber in an offer that values the company at $62 billion. The ride-hailing giant said Wednesday the investors want to buy up to $600 million worth of the private company's stock. They're offering $40 per share, giving Uber a valuation that's nearly 30 percent above the $48 billion set in a January stock sale. Retailers and technology companies led the way as the market erased some early losses. Stocks opened lower after a business survey suggested that the eurozone economy might remain weak for longer than experts had expected. With death rate up, US life expectancy is likely down again

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. death rate rose last year, and 2017 likely will mark the third straight year of decline in American life expectancy, according to preliminary data. Turkish central bank raises key rate and helps lift currency

FBI overstated encryption problem with cell phones

WASHINGTON (AP) — A programming error led the FBI to vastly overstate the number of cell phones that investigators could not access because of encryption, officials said Wednesday. Director Chris Wray has repeatedly said in speeches that nearly 7,800 mobile devices seized during investigations couldn't be opened due to digital encryption in fiscal year 2017.
