Stocks jump, with Buffett helping Apple to new highs

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks made up for a shaky week with a strong finish Friday as Apple led a rally in technology companies. The tech giant hit an all-time high after Warren Buffett said he'd made another big investment. Stocks got off to a mixed start after trade talks between the U.S. and China ended with few signs of progress. The April jobs report showed that hiring continued at a solid clip and wages continued to grow at a slow pace. Apple surged after Buffett said Berkshire Hathaway bought 75 million shares during the first quarter. Читать дальше...

Seahawks release Cliff Avril; injury cost him most of 2017

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SEATTLE (AP) — Defensive end Cliff Avril was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Friday with a failed physical designation due to a neck injury that cost him most of the 2017 season. Avril's release was expected and could mean the end of a 10-year career during which he was a standout player for the Seahawks and the Detroit Lions. Avril was injured in Week 4 last season while trying to chase down Indianapolis quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The back of Brissett's foot caught Avril in the chin as he lunged to make the tackle. 2nd-longest US expansion on record keeps churning out jobs

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy has delivered steady if only modest gains for most Americans since the Great Recession ended in 2009. It's been a frustration for many. Yet the very sluggishness of the economic expansion helps explain why it's now the second-longest on record and why more of the country might soon benefit from higher pay. Nearly nine years into the recovery, the job market keeps delivering: The government said Friday that employers added 164,000 jobs in April — the 91st straight month of hiring growth... Engineering and construction company Fluor slumped 22 percent after reporting a surprise loss in the first quarter and slashing its forecast for the year. Читать дальше...

Woman's gruesome cockroach-in-ear tale goes viral

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Those screams you hear? They're the collective sounds of primal anguish after reading a Florida woman's account of waking up with a palmetto bug in her ear. (That's the polite name for a flying cockroach, for those of you not acquainted with the reviled Sunshine State insects.) Katie Holley's gruesome experience happened in the early morning hours of April 14. Soon after, her sister-in-law — who works as an editor for Self Magazine — asked her to pen an essay . She did... Hawaii volcano sends more lava, sulfur gas into communities

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — The Kilauea volcano sent more lava into Hawaii communities Friday, a day after forcing more than 1,500 people to flee from their mountainside homes, and authorities detected high levels of sulfur gas that could threaten the elderly and people with breathing problems. After a week of earthquakes and warnings, the eruption that began Thursday threw lava into the sky from a crack in a road and sent another line of molten rock snaking through a forest. On Friday, the activity continued... Читать дальше...

How to pick a new password, now that Twitter wants one

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — There are some simple ways to come up with a good password, now that Twitter is asking all users to change theirs. Your new password should be complex — nothing easily guessed, such as common words in the dictionary. Mix in numerals and punctuation marks, and avoid reusing the same password on multiple services. You can also turn on two-factor authentication, which sends you a text with a code each time you log in from a new device or web browser. Even if hackers get your password... Читать дальше...

Google to verify identity of US political ad buyers

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google says it will do a better job of verifying the identity of political ad buyers in the U.S. by requiring a copy of a government-issued ID and other information. Google will also require the disclosure of who is paying for the ad. Google executive Kent Walker is repeating a pledge he made in November to create a library of such ads that will be searchable by anyone by this summer. Google's blog post comes short of declaring support for the Honest Ads Act, a bill that would impose disclosure requirements on online ads... Читать дальше...

Harvard forum examines safety of self-driving vehicles

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

BOSTON (AP) — A Harvard University forum has examined how a recent death linked to self-driving technology is causing concern about safety. "It's a little bit like the Wild West out there right now," said Deborah Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. Hersman was part of a Friday panel discussion at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health that explored whether the field is advancing too quickly as dozens of companies have begun experimenting on public streets in several U.S.... Читать дальше...

Correction: Zodiac Killer-DNA story

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a story May 3 about the Zodiac Killer investigation, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the killer was dubbed Zodiac because of astrological symbols he included in letters sent to police and media. The killer referred to himself as Zodiac in the letters.

Hotel rooms by the hour — or the minute

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Most hotels already offer quick checkout. Now, a growing number are selling briefer stays, too. Through an app called Recharge, some 50 hotels in San Francisco and New York offer rooms by the minute — at 40 cents to $2 per minute, depending on demand and time of day. That means the opportunity to take an hour nap in a comfortable bed for $24 to $120 before the usual taxes and other fees collected by hotels. That isn't exactly a bargain. For instance, two of the participating... Читать дальше...

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have hired Dan Morgan to take over as their player personnel director. Morgan joins the Bills after spending the previous seven seasons working his way up the Seattle Seahawks' scouting ranks. He most recently served as Seattle's pro personnel director in overseeing the team's pro and advance scouting duties. He replaces Brian Gaine, who left the Bills after just one season to return to Houston in January and become Texans general manager. Morgan is a former NFL linebacker... Читать дальше...

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported Friday that 834 rigs drilled for oil this week and 196 for gas. Two were listed as miscellaneous. Democrats using 2017 'Obamacare' vote as political weapon

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A year ago Friday, Democrats sarcastically serenaded Republicans with chants of "Nah nah nah nah, hey hey, goodbye" as the GOP shoved legislation through the House scuttling the Obamacare health care law. Now, Democrats battling to capture House and Senate control in November's elections are trying to weaponize that roll call, in which 217 Republicans voted yes. In Michigan, Arkansas and elsewhere, Democrats are hammering Republicans for voting to replace the increasingly popular... Читать дальше...

Bill seeks park status for New Mexico's stunning white dunes

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

A vast expanse of shifting white sand dunes in southern New Mexico would be elevated from a national monument to a national park under legislation proposed Friday by one of the state's senators. U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, a Democrat, made the announcement while visiting the state as part of a multiday tour that also included looking at the potential for more outdoor recreation elsewhere as New Mexico and other western states promote their wide open spaces in hopes of attracting more tourists and more money. Analysts: US trade demands could make deal with China harder

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

BEIJING (AP) — A list of hard-line demands that the Trump administration handed China this week could make it even more difficult to resolve a trade conflict between the world's two largest economies. That's the view of trade analysts who say the U.S. insistence that Beijing shrink America's gaping trade deficit with China by $200 billion by the end of 2020, among other demands, are more likely to raise tensions than to calm them. A U.S. official confirmed the authenticity of a document outlining... Читать дальше...

US hedge fund wrests Telecom Italia control from Vivendi

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

ROZZANO, Italy (AP) — French media group Vivendi lost de facto control of Telecom Italia on Friday when a U.S. activist hedge fund won a majority of seats on the former state monopoly's board in a dramatic shareholders' showdown that also raised questions about the government's role. Cheers went up among small stakeholders when Elliott Advisors' narrow 49.8 percent victory over Vivendi's 47.2 percent was announced. Elliott claims 10 seats, which it says it will fill with a cadre of well-known Italian businessmen, to Vivendi's five. Читать дальше...

Volcanic 'curtain of fire' sends people fleeing Hawaii homes

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — Nearly 1,500 people fled from their mountain-side homes after Hawaii's Kilauea volcano sent molten lava chewing through forests and bubbling up on paved streets in an eruption that one resident described as "a curtain of fire." After a week of earthquakes and warnings that an eruption could be imminent, steam and lava poured out of a crack Thursday in the community of Leilani Estates near the town of Pahoa on the Big Island, officials said. Television footage showed lava spurting into the sky from a crack in a road. Читать дальше...
