Some lawsuits can proceed over cigarettes touted as natural

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A U.S. judge in New Mexico has dismissed more than two dozen complaints against the maker of American Spirit cigarettes but is allowing others to move forward over a line of tobacco touted as natural. Scores of plaintiffs from at least a dozen states sued Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co. and its parent company, Reynolds American Inc., after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found in 2015 that consumers were misled about risks associated with the products. In a ruling last week... Читать дальше...

NFL changes concussion protocol after Savage incident

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

HOUSTON (AP) — The NFL and the players' union announced a series of changes Friday to the way potential concussions are handled during games following an ugly incident in which Texans quarterback Tom Savage was allowed to return to the field after a hit left him on the ground, arms shaking. Among the changes is the addition of an expert watching games from a central location with the authority to alert sideline medical teams to look into an incident. And if a player shows signs of a seizure or similar responses... Читать дальше...

Another late flop overshadows Washington State's season

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

A nine-win season at Washington State was a monumental accomplishment worthy of celebration because success had been so fleeting for the Cougars. Yet the past two 9-4 seasons resulted in flops to end the year — first in the Apple Cup against rival Washington and then in the Holiday Bowl both times. The latest deflating finish came in Thursday night's 42-17 loss to Michigan State. It concluded an awkward month where Washington State was routed by the Huskies and missed out on the Pac-12 North title... Читать дальше...

Police investigate if video game prank led to shooting death

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas police are investigating whether an argument over an online game prompted a prank call that led to a house where an officer shot and killed a man who apparently wasn't involved in the dispute. Police and industry officials say the tragic death Thursday in Wichita, Kansas, may have been the result of a practice called "swatting," in which a person makes up a false report to get a SWAT team to descend on an address. Wichita Deputy Police Chief Troy Livingston said the shooting... Читать дальше...

Bernice Kekona's family says Alaska promised she would be escorted from one gate to another at the airport in Portland, Oregon, in June. «Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump returned to a favorite target Friday, saying that Amazon.com should be charged more by the U.S. Postal Service for the packages it sends around the world. Amazon has been a consistent recipient of Trump's ire. He has accused the company of failing to pay "internet taxes," though it's never been made clear by the White House what the president means by that. In a tweet Friday, Trump said Amazon should be charged "MUCH MORE" by the post office because it's "losing... Читать дальше...

2017 winners and losers: Amazon, Boeing soared; GE plunged

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — It was a strong year for the stock market, but 2017 was a great year if you made airplanes (think Boeing), were an online juggernaut (Amazon) or built homes (KB Homes). It was a year to forget if you were an energy company (Chesapeake) made Barbie dolls (Mattel) or if you were a storied industrial conglomerate about to go on a radical slim-down program (General Electric). The stock market had a banner year overall, but there were plenty of big winners, and big losers, among individual... Читать дальше...
