Yellen says public trust in Fed ethics is critical

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said Tuesday that the Fed's effectiveness critically depends on the nation's confidence that the central bank is acting only in the public's interest. Yellen said it is important for Fed officials to "demonstrate our ethical standards in ways that leave little room for doubt." Yellen's remarks came at a ceremony where she and former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke were honored with this year's Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government, named for the late Illinois senator. AP PHOTOS: 'Sea of humanity' overwhelms homeless services

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Homelessness is not a new issue to America's West Coast. But it's getting worse - much worse. On any given night, more than 105,000 people are sleeping unsheltered in some of the country's biggest and trendiest metropolises, driven there by soaring housing costs, rental vacancy rates that rival those in Manhattan and a booming tech economy that's leaving thousands behind. Another 63,000 are sleeping in shelters or transitional housing with no safety net. The rising numbers have pushed abject poverty into the open like never before. Читать дальше...

In Silicon Valley, the homeless illustrate a growing divide

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — In the same affluent, suburban city where Google built its headquarters, Tes Saldana lives in a crowded but tidy camper she parks on the street. She concedes it's "not a very nice living situation," but it also is not unusual. Until authorities told them to move, more than a dozen other RVs filled with people who can't afford rent joined Saldana on a tree-lined street in Mountain View, parked between a Target and a luxury apartment complex. Repeal of medical deduction prompts tax bill pushback

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The medical expense deduction targeted for repeal by GOP tax writers has helped to offset costs including nursing home care and fertility treatments, laser eye surgery and travel out-of-state for a second opinion on a rare cancer. Several million people unlucky enough to face big medical bills not covered by their insurance would lose a valuable deduction under the House GOP bill. Groups representing older people and patients are trying to save it. "Anybody who is paying for the... Читать дальше...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is moving ahead with a law from the Obama years that will require calorie counts to appear on foods served at restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores and pizza delivery chains nationwide. Despite years of opposition by some food sellers, the Food and Drug Administration is offering only minor accommodations to industry complaints about the difficulties of displaying the information. The FDA posted recommendations Tuesday to help businesses comply with the law. Читать дальше...

Drugstore pain pills as effective as opioids in ER patients

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

CHICAGO (AP) — Emergency rooms are where many patients are first introduced to powerful opioid painkillers, but what if doctors offered over-the-counter pills instead? A new study tested that approach on patients with broken bones and sprains and found pain relievers sold as Tylenol and Motrin worked as well as opioids at reducing severe pain. The results challenge common ER practice for treating short-term, severe pain and could prompt changes that would help prevent new patients from becoming addicted. Читать дальше...

US job openings flat in September as hurricanes slow hiring

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers posted roughly the same number of open jobs in September as the previous month, partly because hurricanes held back hiring at restaurants and hotels. The Labor Department said Tuesday that 6.09 million jobs were available at the end of September, not far from the record high of 6.14 million reached in July. The number of open jobs in restaurants and hotels fell 111,000 from August. That reflects widespread damage in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which struck many vacation spots in Texas... Power rankings: Are the Seahawks who we thought they were?

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Sunday's 17-14 home loss to the Washington Redskins, which featured inept play on offense, a last-minute collapse on defense, ineptitude in the kicking game -- as Blair Walsh missed not one, not two, but three field goals -- and a franchise-record 16 penalties, was jarring. Simply put: These Seahawks might not be who we thought they were.
