April 8, 2018. Australian Jemima Montag, speaks in Currumbin, after winning gold in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 20km women’s race walk in only her third race over the distance. Team-mate Claire Tallent was holding onto a narrow lead over Montag when she was handed a third and final red card just two kilometres from the finish line. Montag says “it’s really not the way you want to win a gold medal, especially having an Australian team-mate being disqualified, so it was heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time”. Montag praises Tallent for being a good sport after the veteran embraced the 20-year-old when she crossed the finish line. Montag also says a lot of people don’t understand the sport of race walking - “oh, it’s that thing on Kath and Kim, or the way the old people go around the park, but there’s that and there’s elite race walking”.
