Pashinyan unveils details about Brussels meeting with Aliyev

 He said that they have made decisions over two issues as a result of the meeting.

“First the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries have been instructed to start preparatory work on a future peace treaty and initiate talks and contacts in that direction.

This means that as a result of talks the principles proposed by Armenia and Azerbaijan on the peace treaty and issues must be brought together and addressed,” Nikol Pashinyan said.  

He reminded that during the previous cabinet sitting he voiced the observations of the Government of Armenia about them.

“The meeting also touched upon the deterioration of the security environment in Nagorno Karabakh, in particular, the developments in Parukh, but those discussions did not lead to a joint assessment of the situation. I did not consider it appropriate to discuss this very issue on the Brussels platform, as it is about the incursion of Azerbaijani units into the area of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping mission in Nagorno Karabakh, and this issue should be discussed more with the participation of Russian partners, which we do and will continue doing,” he noted.

Pashinyan said that the second decision is about setting up a bilateral commission that will work on border delimitation issue.

“This commission will have a double mandate – the first one is the delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the second, it will ensure a stable security situation along the borderline. Discussions on this matter, including with the mediation of the Russian Federation, are taking place for about a year and finally we have reached such a compromised decision. We have Armenian territories that are under the control of Azerbaijan and there are Azerbaijani territories that are under the control of Armenia and these issues should be settled through talks based on the facts with legal significance.”

The head of the government said both Russia and the EU expressed readiness to support in the border delimitation and demarcation work.

“The issue of opening communications in the region was also one of the topics of discussion, around which we registered certain misinterpretations and agreed to continue working to find solutions.

If to give a general assessment to the Brussels meeting, I must state that an agreement has been reached to move forward in two directions, and the further assessment depends on the results to be achieved during the practical implementation of these agreements,” he said.
